History of the Inventor: During the 1st World War, occupied Belgium was subordinated to a governor general. His chief of the general staff had to secure the area militarily; next to him stood a chief of the civil administration. Inventory description: By cabinet order of 23.8.1914 the occupied Belgium was subordinated to a general government. His chief of the general staff had to secure the area militarily; next to him stood a chief of the civil administration. From 1915 an independent "Political Department of the General Governor in Belgium" was subordinated to the civil administration, to which the following tasks were assigned: 1. diplomacy, 2. domestic politics, 3. Belgian-American food factory, 4. Belgian archives, 5. press. Characterization of content: The records of the Political Department include records and files of Schwertfeger and his collaborators Professor Dr. Karl Spannagel and Professor Dr. Alfred Doren. Schwertfeger's handfiles consist mainly of copies of the Belgian diplomatic reports, from which Schwertfeger published the file "Zur europäischen Politik 1897-1914" in 1919. Among other things, these contain material on Belgian economic interests in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The civil administration has handed down minutes of meetings, studies, memorandums and other documents on economics, transport and banking. Pre-archival order: The files of the Political Department of the Governor General in Belgium have been completely lost. Description of the holdings: In 1920 the attaché service was essentially dissolved. Between 1920 and 1933, no naval attachés were notified to German embassies abroad. From 1933 to 1945, the Kriegsmarine again sent naval attachés to the most important embassies. The majority of the naval attachés' files from 1933 to 1945 are still with the British admiralty in London. In the form of microfilms, the Federal Archives contain documents of the naval attaché in Madrid as well as fragments of files from Tokyo, Moscow and Oslo. Characterisation of content: Of the imperial naval attachés, only files of the attaché in Sofia from World War I have survived to a considerable extent. The tradition for the individual naval attachés since 1933 is very different. Description: In this find book all documents are listed, which I considered important for the history of my family. They cover the period from about 1849 to the mid-60s of the 20th century and end with the death of my father on January 22, 1966. When I began reviewing the extensive records, I had no idea how exciting exploring the history of my own family would be for me. The fact that my two grandfathers were already "eager to travel (my mother's father with the Imperial Navy from 1901-1903 in East Asia and in World War I on the armoured cruiser Goeben in the Mediterranean and in the Bosporus, my father's father travelled a lot professionally and for some time even lived with his family in Brussels) makes research even more interesting. I consider my father's diary notes and hundreds of related negatives from the Second World War to be particularly valuable. The Leica, with which my father had also photographed in Cologne since 1931, accompanied him throughout the war. The photographs are in a separate list as part of the "FamilieBilder" collection.
