Scope and content
Associations developed in Saxony in the course of the 18th/19th century. Taking up the ideas of the Enlightenment, there was initially an increased need for exchange, information and education in bourgeois circles. During the Vormärz period, gymnastics and singing clubs, speech societies and societies whose members met regularly were formed. In them, citizens exchanged their thoughts on politics, culture and religion in social gatherings, lectures and newsletters. The women's societies of the 19th century were primarily of a charitable nature. As political associations, the Fatherland Associations and German Associations formed during the revolutionary events of 1848/49 had a considerable influence on politics. The workers' associations experienced a significant upswing in the 1860s and formed the forerunners of the later socialist and communist parties. The purpose of the professional and economic associations included the exchange of experience and research results, the dissemination of specialised literature and the further education of association members. Committees and associations were only active for a limited period of time on the occasion of anniversaries, the erection of monuments or the organisation of exhibitions. In contrast, scientific associations as sponsors or supporters of museums and cultural associations as promoters of regional awareness had a longer-term impact.<br/>Reference: For genealogical associations, see 'Collections on personal and family history
