Preface: The "Wittelsbacher Landesstiftung zur Förderung des Bayerischen Handwerks in Stadt und Land" (Wittelsbacher Handwerksstiftung) had been founded in 1880 at the instigation of King Ludwig II and on the basis of collective funds amounting to more than 540,000 Reichsmark.
The purpose of the foundation was in particular:
1. Awarding prizes to outstanding apprentices
2. Supporting capable assistants to attend technical schools and further training events
3. Award of master craftsmen
4. Granting of subsidies for the organisation of courses and other enterprises for the professional training of craftsmen.
The organ of the foundation was the Landesstiftungsrat under the chairmanship of the respective Minister of the Interior; since 1921 the organ of the foundation was the ministry to whose business area the craft matters belonged, i.e. at that time the Ministry for Trade, Industry and Commerce (MHIG). Because of its small residual assets, the Wittelsbacher Handwerksstiftung was abolished by the Ministry of the Interior on 1 February 1962.
The files of the Wittelsbacher Handwerksstiftung recorded in this find book were regarded as stable records and therefore, as an exception, were not divided between the holdings of the Ministry of the Interior and MHIG, but left in their entirety with MHIG. These are the MHIG order numbers 3738 to 4224 (term: 1880 - 1923). On the one hand, the holdings include administrative files, for example meeting and annual reports as well as files on asset management, and on the other hand the funding applications to the Foundation, arranged according to government districts (order numbers 3810 to 4224; the majority of Upper Bavarian funding files are missing in the holdings). As a rule, these contain resolutions of the Landesstiftungsrat on grants (in print) and applications for funding forwarded to the respective district foundation council or Landesstiftungsrat; in addition, there are e.g. expert opinions and various supporting documents and enclosures.
The present inventory will be particularly useful for research on Bavarian economic and crafts history from 1880 to the end of the First World War. Due to the large number of funding applications submitted by local guilds and trade associations, it is also likely to be relevant for local history research.
Munich, September 2007
Dr. Joachim Kemper
