Preface :
Contents and library profile

The library of the Sankt Augustin Municipal Archives comprises over 3.100 volumes from the late 17th century until today. There you will find above all
- basic general historical reference books, encyclopaedias and journals;
- books and periodicals on local and regional geography;
- basic works on folklore, family and natural history, church, administrative, social and economic history;
- Literature on Saint Augustine history;
- Works of Saint Augustine authors;
- dialect poetry and
- grey literature (address books, expert opinions, unprinted scientific theses, etc.).
As a rule, the library does not contain journal articles or commemorative publications. Instead, these can be found in the SGL and SGF inventories. For reasons of space, many series are also not to be found in the library, but in the holdings group SGR (see below: Supplementary holdings).
The Sankt Augustin Municipal Archives are making an effort, to keep in his library the most important sources relevant and printed for the development of Sankt Augustin. Further libraries with a larger regional historical focus can be found in the Neighbouring cities Bonn and Siegburg (Academic libraries in the Bonn City Archives or the in the archive of the Rhein-Sieg district, Siegburg).

Target groups
Target groups of the library are all interested in the history and development of Sankt Augustin. In particular, the library offers a good basis for the work of students, homeland and family researchers. Also many fundamental historical questions, e.g. on the Second World War or the Empire, can be answered with the help of the library.
Library systematics and arrangement
The volumes are arranged according to their own, thematically ordered library systematics. This was created in 2004/2005 on the basis of the Bergische Bibliographie (Ulrich Rauchenbichler (editor)) published by Ulrich Rauchenbichler in 1986: Bergische Bibliographie, in: Journal of the Bergischer Geschichtsverein, 91. Volume, Volume 1984/1985, Neustadt an der Aisch 1986, S.1-269 [library signature 12AF 091]), also to enable a comparison with the local bibliographies.

Main groups
>As in the Bergische Bibliographie there are 9 main groups:
01 General
02 Natural and regional studies
03 Folklore
04 General and political history
05 Law, Constitution, Administration
06 Society
07 Economy and transport
08 Religion and church
09 Art and culture
There are three further main groups, which are not taken from the Bergische Bibliographie:
10 Archiving
11 Sources and finding aids of other archives and Facilities
12 Region and surrounding municipalities

Subgroups
Each main group can be divided into several subgroups by appending one or more letters to the signature, z.B.
03 folklore
03A folklore and customs
03AA fairy tales and legends
03B Daily Life
03C Language
03CA Dictionaries
03CB Dialect Texts
General or Connections can then be found in the higher-level groups, more specific ones in the lower-level ones.

Sankt Augustin-Specific
The Those Volumes, which deal exclusively or mainly with Sankt Augustiner topics, have the letter "S" in the signature in front of the main group. All volumes marked with an "S" are listed separately, but the uniform use of the main groups in the search means that the regional extension or Specification possible, e.g.
07FC air traffic (general),
S07FC air traffic (in Sankt Augustin, especially Hangelar airfield).

The main groups 10 to 12 do not necessarily exist at "S", but the Sankt Augustin-specific groups do:
S21 Twin towns
S22 Single districts
S24 Sankt Augustiner Authors

Signatures
The signatures initially include the classification group, followed by usually four letters and usually a consecutive number, z.B.
Hartmut Küper: Bonn-Hangelar. History of an airfield. Volume 2: 1926-1936, Siegburg 2005, signature "S07FC Kuep2"
All volumes of the library have unique signatures, to make it easier to find and borrow the volumes. The volumes are arranged alphanumerically according to signatures.
If possible, several copies of particularly frequently required volumes (with different signature endings) into the library.
Oversized volumes are included in the general signature scheme, but are prepared separately for storage reasons.

History of the Library
An Administrative Library with a Collection The administration of the Menden office (Rhld.), the legal predecessor of the city of Sankt Augustin. With the foundation of the City Archive in 1980, the collection of a small reference library was started, which was first recorded in 1986. Later, the collection was continued by means of a simple Microsoft Access 2.0 database.
The library was fundamentally revised in 2004/2005. The library profile was clarified and a complete revision of the holdings was carried out, in which approx. 800 works were eliminated, which either no longer fitted into the profile, surplus doubles or were obsolete. Furthermore, all other volumes, some of them for the first time, were recorded completely and according to a uniform scheme using the database Augias-Archiv 7.3. Since the library system (see above) was also fundamentally redeveloped, all approx. 2000 volumes had to be re-signed.
The library continues to grow through acquisitions (new publications and antiquarian books), exchanges, donations, Takeovers from municipal offices and estates (especially the estate of Engelbert Scheiffarth).

Complementary holdings in the City Archive
The City Archive Sankt Augustin offers v.a. The following supplementary stocks:
Local and regional series can be found in the stock group "SGR". This also includes regular publications by the city, schools, other local institutions, churches and associations, in addition, archival journals, historical journals and series (for exampleB. Romerike Mountains; Around the Michaelsberg. Heimatblätter for the Siegkreis).
The "SGF" collection includes all commemorative publications of the city and schools, Institutions and facilities, companies, societies and economic associations, churches and associations.
Newspapers and legal gazettes can be found in the SGR stock.
A large number of smaller printed matter and excerpts from books and Magazines on Sankt Augustiner topics are available in the "SGL" collection.

Use of the library
All works of the library can be found in the "Treffpunkt Stadtarchiv" in the town hall (basement), market 1) during the special opening hours. Books can be borrowed free of charge for three weeks.

Sankt Augustin, February 2015
Michael Korn
