Description of series: Documents relating to the certificates and survey reports for all equipment and functioning of a vessel. History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer: "Prior to transfer-" The "Prinz Sigismund" a merchant vessel of 3302 tons gross and 1844 tons net register, arrived in Brisbane from Japan on 4/8/1914. The vessel was detained as an enemy (German) vessel on 5/8/1914 and seized 'in prize 'on 6/8/1914. After, she was brought before the Prize Court for adjudication; she was taken over from the Commonwealth Government by the Western Australian Government for trading on the coast of that state. She was renamed the 'BAMBRA'. In 1927 the "BAMBRA" was handed over to the United Kingdom Government and was subsequently sold to a Dutch firm of shipbreakers. Ordinarily the ship's papers would have been passed on to the Western Australian Government with the ship, but at the particular time this was overlooked and they remained in the custody of the Collector of Customs, Qld, until transfer to Archives. Subsequent to transfer - The documents are written in German, however it was ascertained that, in the main, the documents relate to: - Certificate of Seaworthiness, Docking Freeboard Certificate, Machine Certificate, Lloyds Test Certificate (Anchors), Government Surveyors Certificate of Measurements and Seaworthiness, General Licence for the Conveyance of Chinese Emigrants, Survey Certificate.

To supervise the entire business operations of the emigrant expedition, a deputation for emigration was set up in 1855. This was taken over by a proof office for emigrants run by the Association for the Protection of Emigrants founded in 1850, whose employees henceforth acted as police officers for emigration (emigration police). The tasks performed by the police authority before 1855 (receiving the emigrant lists, allowing the emigrant ships to leave) remained there. In 1887, the deputation was renamed the Authority for Emigration. It was also entrusted with the essential tasks of the police authority in the field of emigration. In 1918, the authority also took over the remaining emigrant affairs handled by the police authority (supervision of emigrants at railway stations, care of returnees and supervision of emigrant halls). The police office at the Emigrant Halls was renamed the Überseeheim Office and dissolved in 1934. In 1928, the Emigration Office was given the name Emigration Office and was now subject to the Deputation for Trade, Shipping and Commerce, which consisted of the lists of emigrants kept by the police authority, the series of protocols with deputation appendices kept until 1877, the files of the official registration office established after 1887 and a special police office registration at the emigration halls. Supplements were made from the tradition of the Department of Economics, Transport and Agriculture - Port and Shipping Office. The lists of emigrants (1850-1934) and returnees (1920-1935) form the actual core of the Best. For conservation reasons, they can only be used as microfilms. The lists from 1935 onwards (lists of returnees from 1936 onwards) were lost due to the war. The Best. also contains information on the activities of the services involved in emigration (annual reports, statistics), on emigration legislation, emigration policy, emigration and immigration abroad, emigration support and protection, emigration experts and agents, accommodation facilities, emigration ships and other emigration matters.
