Archival history

History:
The Badische Landesbühne emerged from the Unterländer Volksbühne, which had been founded in Bad Rappenau in 1949 by returning prisoners of war and the Kulturwerk Baden-Württemberg. Its initiator and first artistic director (until 1964) was the actor Franz Mosthav (1916-2000) from Oedheim, who after his training in Munich and activities at Munich, Klagenfurt and Salzburg stages had been engaged at the Mannheim National Theatre since 1946. Soon, 27 predominantly Baden towns and municipalities in 5 counties became members of the Volksbühne. The theatre was financed as a registered association by contributions from these municipalities and state subsidies. Competition from the Württembergische Landesbühne in Esslingen, which had existed since 1919, and the imminent establishment of a federal state of Baden-Württemberg led to the Volksbühne settling in Baden. She was admitted in 1952 in the town of Bruchsal, which provided rooms and joined the association in 1953. The theatre was now renamed Landesbühne Neckar-Rhein-Main, later Landesbühne Bruchsal. The times of temporary accommodation ended in the 80s with the rental of own rehearsal rooms in Wilderichstraße 31 and the move into a new workshop building. Thanks to additional funds, a children's and youth theatre group was set up at the Landesbühne during this time. Since 1987, the theatre has had two venues in the Bruchsal Bürgerhaus. Today, 4 administrative districts, 16 member municipalities, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts form the supporting association. The member locations are mainly in the northern Baden area. The ancestral playing area ranges from Bruchsal-Bretten to Tauberbischofsheim-Wertheim. In addition, guest performances are performed throughout Baden-Württemberg and the neighbouring federal states.

Tradition and order:
In the commemorative publication for the 50th anniversary (see Literature) there is a reference to the fact that the theatre's archive was accidentally lost during the move in 1987. The findings apply above all to the documents of the founding period, which actually only survived fragmentarily; more dense tradition only began in the 1960s; nothing dates back to the time before the move to Bruchsal. Nevertheless, the volume of written and pictorial material that the Landesbühne transferred to the ownership of the Landesarchiv in 2005 is considerable; the large series of protocols and, above all, the programme material, which also includes the collection of stage photographs, contribute to this. At the handover the material was disordered, the photos were unfortunately only partially labeled. Mrs. Gisela Schenck - honorary - reconstructed and assigned here with great commitment what was somehow recognizable. Her complete index was transferred to Scope-Archiv by Mrs. Angelika von Schenck and finally edited by Mr. Reinhard Tommek. The stock comprises 1589 numbers in 9 linear metres; it contains several thousand photos and approx. 250 theatre posters.
