Scope and content

  • [around 1914] Stadtarchiv Hof, FPn* Illustration of four graves piled up with white pebbles, with the text below: 'The distant graves. Graves I know, far across the sea, dug according to eternal commandments, there kneels - how often! - the German woe and greet the dear dead. And bless those who went forth in joyful duty to conquer; and those who, facing east, lie in silent rows. There they rest, with their armour in their arms, and on the blue expanse of the mast no longer see the German pennants gliding proudly by. Here greed and treachery have felled them, when once in days of iron Germany fought in honour for her holy place in the world. Here you won bloody laurels for the flag that never sank; here the homeland finds immortal thanks for the brave who died for it (Rudolf Presber)<br />Text on the back: Kolonialkriegerdank. Association for the support of former colonial warriors of the army, navy, defence and police forces and their surviving dependants. Patron: Duke Johann Albrecht zu Mecklenburg, Honorary President: Duke Adolf Friedrich zu Mecklenburg, Frhr. v. Gayl, General d. Inf., Member of the House of Lords (Graphische Kunstanstalten F. Bruckmann A.-G., Munich)
