History of the Inventory Designer: On January 10, 1917, the German Foreign Institute (DAI) was founded in Stuttgart as a "museum and institute for the study of foreign German studies and the promotion of German interests abroad". According to its statutes, its tasks were to deepen relations between Germans living abroad and the German Reich and to disseminate knowledge about the importance of foreign studies. As an institution under public law with a non-profit character, the DAI was subject to the supervision of the Württemberg Ministry of Culture. It was financed by funds from the Reich, represented by the Ministry of the Interior and the Foreign Office, as well as by the State of Württemberg and the City of Stuttgart. Until it was formally subordinated to the Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle, the DAI retained the status of a private institution. On 25 January 1941 the DAI received from the Reichskommissar für die Festigung deutschen Volkstums (Reich Commissioner for the Consolidation of the German People) the "commission for a comprehensive documentation of all processes connected with the complete works of German resettlement".
In the course of the consolidation of West Germany and its foreign relations after the Second World War, the Württemberg-Badish state government issued a decree on 5 July 1949 establishing a new Institute for Foreign Relations (ifa), which was only practically completed in 1951. The statutes of the ifa date from April 23, 1952.
Stand: December 2003

Description of the collection: On January 10, 1917, the Deutsches Ausland-Institut (DAI) was founded in Stuttgart as a "museum and institute for customers of German studies abroad and for the promotion of German interests abroad".
