Archival history
The cultural-historical archive of the Francke Foundations in Halle looks back on three hundred years of history. Its holdings reflect the rise and fall of Hallescher Pietism and the varied history of the Francke Foundations. Most of the archives date back to the heyday of Halle's Pietism in the first half of the 18th century. In addition to the historical archive departments, there are extensive collections documenting the recent history of the foundation. The archives also keep estates and deposits of private individuals and institutions. The archive holdings currently comprise 600 linear metres of files and manuscripts, 3,300 plans, 270 palm leaf manuscripts, 19,500 pictures, 10,200 newspaper clippings and 550 posters. In addition to the use of finding files and finding books, which can be consulted in the catalogue room of the Study Centre, research in databases enables access to the archive holdings. Their presentation on the Internet is one of the main tasks of the archive. They are the result of planned development projects, which the archive carries out primarily in third-party funded projects. The entire stock of the archive is divided into several departments, each with its own internal system.
