G.S. Mackenzie (Zanzibar) to Lt. Swayne Sets out aims of expedition - mapping routes - friendly contact with tribes - exchanging treaties. Recommends route through Kikumbuliu and Kikuyu permanent station possibly on former site. Next trading post at Njemps in charge of Jackson, Kenvick and Crawford. Ivory bought there should finance expedition. On to Wadelai forming a caravan route between Emin Pasha's province and Mombasa. 2nd caravan in 3 months to take over from Jackson etc. who then continue down coast by different route making surveys and treaties. Importance of making peace with Masai - arranging trading with them etc. Any firm opposition and caravan should re-route to meet Galla tribes. Keep Company informed of progress and of Longo charges Stresses importance and aims of expedition. P.S. on use of flag, surveying wells, trading samples and presents to chiefs.
