Überlieferungsgeschichte
In a contract dated November 1991, the district and the town of Freudenberg agreed that the archives belonging to the town of Freudenberg would be looked after by the district archive and stored in Bronnbach. The documents were transferred to Bronnbach in several shipments and deliveries between 1993 and 1999. Some of the archives had already been organised and recorded by Julius Friedrich Kastner, the chief curator for the municipal archives in the district of Tauberbischofsheim appointed by the General State Archive in Karlsruhe. Initial work on the Freudenberg municipal archive was carried out in 1957, the Boxtal municipal archive was organised and catalogued in 1956 and the Rauenberg municipal archive in 1962. The archival records of the town of Freudenberg and the districts of Boxtal, Ebenheid, Rauenberg and Wessental, which had not yet been catalogued at the time they were transferred to the district archive, were recorded using delivery lists.
Content and evaluation
The tradition of the municipal archives dates back to 1517. The municipal sources begin in the 16th century, mostly with individual official records and documents, and the records become denser in the 19th century. All municipal archives are categorised according to documents, records, volumes, invoices and maps, which was also adopted for the index supplements.
