abstract: The Visual Arts Archive was established in 1994 and collects, preserves and catalogues the written estates of painters, graphic artists, sculptors, art historians and publicists as well as the holdings of artists' associations and societies from the end of the 19th century to the present day. It currently looks after more than 145 individual holdings and 37 collections with around 1,000 metres of written material as well as around 40,000 photos and 30,000 slides. The predominantly written materials provide information on the works and biographical stages of well over 20,000 artists who were and are organised in German artists' associations in the past and present. The archive, in which the holdings of Academy members - accounting for more than a quarter of the total collection - form a focal point, represents one of the most extensive collections of sources on German art history since 1900. Focal points of the collection: - Members of the Academy of Arts - Dada Berlin - New Objectivity - Visual artists in exile - Abstraction and Realism - Art historians and publicists - Artists' associations and their members
Kurzbeschreibung: Einführung
Inventory description: The V. department consists of archival collections on individuals, various topics and individual items. In addition to selects from provenance holdings, which are kept separately for storage reasons, these are pure collection items that supplement the holdings or are replacement items. The personal collections relating to Albert Einstein, Fritz Haber and Max Planck should be emphasised. Holdings of the Vc. Department, such as medals and realia, are of particular interest for exhibitions on the history of science.
