Archival history

In October 1910, members of the 2nd Kurhessen Infantry Regiment 82 erected the Southwest Africa Monument in Göttingen (at the corner of Geismarer Landstraße-Friedländer Weg), one of the few colonial monuments on German soil. It originally consisted of a stone base with a dedication plate, which was supplemented by a bronze eagle in 1913. The eagle's head was auctioned in 1978 for the benefit of the Zimbabwe Africa National Union (Zanu) and handed over to the University of Namibia (Windhoek) in 1999, where it is exhibited in memory of the colonial wars and the oppression of the peoples of Africa.
