          The estate of the Prussian Minister of Culture Carl Heinrich Becker was given to the Secret State Archives in 1973 by his son Prof. Dr. Hellmut Becker as a deposit. The estate consists of two main groups, 1. correspondence and 2. factual documents. Business and factual correspondence were not separated, as the transitions were fluid and difficult to distinguish in individual cases. Associations, authorities, etc. are listed in the correspondence as correspondence partners and in the subject groups with writings, publications and statutes. In the case of factual files, a detailed division into individual subject groups was made. These are Carl Heinrich Becker's notes on official matters as well as Becker's publications and works as professor of Oriental Studies. The collection was edited by Dr. Cécile Lowenthal-Hensel, Heidemarie Nowak, Sabine Preuß and Elke Prinz. The technical writing work was done by Petra Bergert.           The archive of the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium was stored in the archive room of the Gymnasium, which was located in the basement of the building at 117er Ehrenhof, until it was taken over by the city archive on 3 September 2008. The files, photos and documents were stored on wooden and steel shelves and in locked steel cabinets (personalia), roughly sorted according to material groups, file groups or filing layers. Earlier registry orders were no longer recognizable. The printed programmes (predecessors of the annual reports) and prize distributions up to 1900, the testimonies from 1901 to 1944, censorship lists from 1894/95, 1900/01 and 1910/11 to 1944/45 (incomplete) as well as files up to 1992/2000 and photos up to 2005 were taken over by the City Archives, as well as a selection of course books from 1974/75, 1979/80, 1984/85, 1994/95 and 1995/96. The part of the school archive now stored in the town archives comprises the printed prize distributions of the Lycées of the Napoleonic period, the invitations and programmes of the Grand Ducal Gymnasium as well as the preserved documents of the Grand Ducal, Old (or Autumn) and New (or Easter) Gymnasiums. In addition, the records from the Hessian, National Socialist and post-war periods. The files of the representative for the secondary schools in Mainz 1945 (personal union with the then director Dr. August Mayer), the files of the circle of friends and sponsors of the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium (formerly: Bund der Freunde und ehemaligen Schüler des Humanistischen Gymnasiums) and 2 files of the Philologenverband Rheinland-Pfalz (board in personal union with the director Dr. Peter Fehl) belong to the archive. The documents of the representative for the secondary schools in Mainz are especially interesting for the school system of the immediate post-war period in Mainz and because of the documented denazification measures of Mainz teachers. The circle of friends and supporters of the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium takes care of contacts with former pupils, organises events and plays a decisive role in events such as school anniversaries. The registry work began in January 2011 and was completed in October 2013, the trainee Mrs. Saskia David recorded in August 2011 the archival records no. 209 / 400 - 708. Although two registry layers were still visible during the registry work, it must be stated that the majority of the originally existing registry orders have been dissolved over the decades. The school archive was thoroughly thinned again and again, especially for school anniversaries and commemorative publications or other publications. Documents were torn out of their original file context and brought into new "artificial" contexts. In this way, folders were created with topics such as "Interesting Facts on School History" or material collections for essays, commemorative publications, exhibitions and anniversaries. The two registration layers mentioned above included the administrative files from about 1930 to 1945, arranged according to the registration plan for secondary schools [signature 209 / 1042, with date of receipt stamp of 4 July 1931], which provides for file groups from I.1 to XXV.10, and the second administrative files from 1946 to 1959, which were created according to the same plan. The files were stapled in cardboard folders of different colours, handwritten with the registration signature and the title according to the registration plan. Since the folders contained a metal stapling, they were in most cases replaced by archive folders. The original registry signature, if available, is indicated in the Faust database and in the Findbuch in the category "Old registry signature". Archivale 209/978 contains an extended version of the above-mentioned registration plan (10 pages, typewritten, 1959). Until the end of the First World War, the tradition essentially consisted of testimonies, censorship lists and personal files, which began in 1870. With a few exceptions, the transmission of material files only begins at the end of the First World War. In Archivale 209 / 897, there is a reference to the fact that "the files of the Gymnasialarchiv are very incomplete, since a large part of them was lost during many years of storage in the wet cellar of the destroyed school building [at the 117er Ehrenhof]". School principal Dr. Fehl writes on 15.4.1959 (209/978): "Due to the effects of the war further documents, especially of the "Old Gymnasium" are no longer available." In addition, it is pointed out that "the files of the Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt and the school department of the then government in Darmstadt concerning the grammar school were completely destroyed by fire in 1944". (209/897) The holdings included two files of the Gutenberg School, Oberschule für Jungen (now Staatliches Gymnasium am Kurfürstlichen Schloss), which were added to the holdings of the City Archives: 202/246: Luftwaffenhelferangelegenheiten (1942-1945) and 202/247: Schülerunfallversicherung (1936-1944). The receipts of the 1960s, hourly tables of other federal states (1965), files on the class parents' advisory board, on long-distance calls, stocks of cleaning utensils and on the Mainz study level 1979/80 (13 D1-3, pupil's bows), a total of about 1 linear metre were collected. The holdings now include the indexes 1-1069, the following signatures were not assigned: 209 / 412, 413, 606, 671, 790, 975, 976. Because of the described state of the Gymnasialarchiv, a new overall content structure was created, which is based on the classification for the Gymnasium am Kurfürstlichen Schloss (holdings 202) archive already listed in the Stadtarchiv. The photo collection of the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium, as far as it was taken over into the city archives, is extensive and includes photos from the 1890s to 2005. Unfortunately, it is largely disordered and still requires a proper sorting, sorting and indexing (cf. 209 / 1044-1069). 26.10.2013, Ramona Weisenberger School History The history of the Mainz Humanistic Gymnasium, today's Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium, has been excellently researched and published, only the commemorative publications "400 Jahre Gymnasium Moguntinum : Festschrift des Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasiums Mainz. - Mainz, 1962", "Gymnasium Moguntinum : the history of the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium Mainz. - Mainz, 1980" and "Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium Mainz : the history of the school / edited by Ferdinand Scherf, Meike Hensel-Grobe, Franz Dumont. - Ruhpolding [et al.], 2007" For an understanding of the files and the history of provenance, the important organisational changes in school history will be presented here. The file tradition does not begin until the 19th century, for the sake of completeness the prehistory is briefly mentioned below. The school was founded on 9.12.1561 as "Gymnasium Moguntinum" in the Burse Zum Algesheimer by the Jesuits and was also run by the Jesuits until 1773. From 1618 to 1782 it was in the Domus Universitatis and from 1782 to 1792 in the Kronberger Hof, where the seminary had previously been located from 1662 to 1773. In 1792 the school moved to the Augustinian monastery, where it remained until 1798, when the city was taken over by the French. Under French rule the grammar school was continued from 1798 to 1802 as a central school and from 1802 to 1814 as a French imperial lyceum in the former Jesuit novitiate. After the withdrawal of the French in 1814, the school now had its seat again in the Kronberger Hof as "Großherzoglich Hessisches Gymnasium bzw. Großherzogliches Gymnasium". In 1829 the "Bischöfliche Gymnasium", founded in 1805, was integrated into the Großherzogliche Gymnasium. In 1889 the grammar school was divided into two buildings due to the increasing number of pupils: In the new building on Kaiserstraße, where the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium is still located today, the middle and upper grades of the grammar school were first accommodated, the lower grades and three preschool classes were taught in the old grammar school at Kronberger Hof. In 1900 the Gymnasium was divided into two separate institutions with their own directors: the Großherzogliches Ostergymnasium in the Kaiserstraße with the start of school at Easter and the Großherzogliches Herbstgymnasium in the Kronberger Hof with the start of school in autumn. From 1912/13 the school year begins in all schools at Easter, so the Herbstgymnasium is renamed Altes Gymnasium and the Ostergymnasium is renamed Neues Gymnasium. Since the beginning of the war in 1914, the Neue Gymnasium on Kaiserstraße has served as a military hospital (after the end of the First World War, the French Girls' Lycée was set up there) and is therefore housed together with the Realgymnasium under catastrophic spatial conditions in today's Schlossgymnasium. In 1923 the Realgymnasium was confiscated by the French occupying authorities, now the Realgymnasium and Neues Gymnasium are accommodated in the Höhere Mädchenschule, the school attendance takes place in shifts. Under these poor conditions, the number of pupils in both the new and old grammar schools is declining. In response, the "Bund der Freunde des Menschenrechtsistischen Gymnasiums" was founded in 1922 to halt the decline of the Gymnasium. In 1924 Neues Gymnasium and Altes Gymnasium were merged in the Kronberger Hof to form the "Altes Gymnasium" or "Hessisches Altes Gymnasium". From 1925 the institution was called "Hessisches Gymnasium", as you can read on the certificates, or just "Gymnasium Mainz" (see 209/963). Starting from these years the number of pupils slowly rises again. Under National Socialist rule, the Gymnasium was renamed "Adam-Karrillon-Gymnasium" on 12 May 1933. Adam Karrillon was a former high school student, doctor and local poet. In January 1943 the lessons were transferred to the former Hermann-Göring-Schule, today the Staatliche Gymnasium am Kurfürstlichen Schloss. The school building of the Adam-Karrillon-Gymnasium is destroyed during the bomb attack on Mainz on 27.02.1945. After the end of the Second World War, teaching was resumed on 2 October 1945 at the Marienschule am Willigisplatz (today's Bischöfliches Willigis-Gymnasium) under the new director Dr August Mayer, who was also the representative for the secondary schools in Mainz. The name "Adam-Karrillon-Gymnasium" is no longer used, instead the school is again simply called "Gymnasium Mainz". In June 1953, the school was renamed "Staatliches Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium" (State Rabanus-Maurus Grammar School), which can now move back into the rebuilt school building on Kaiserstraße / 117er Ehrenhof. In 1958 the classical philologist Dr. Peter Fehl took over the management of the grammar school, which he held until 1977. In 1962 the school celebrates its 400th anniversary.           The holdings 60 (Municipal Administration/Mairie of the City of Mainz, 1798-1814) have a complicated and eventful history of order and description. In the following, an attempt will be made to list the individual stages of this inventory in chronological order. Order of the registry in the French period (1798-1814) The archives 60/113 provide information about the administration of records of the Mainz city administration 1798-1814. The first part is a list of all files and official books created or kept since the establishment of the municipal administration, which was compiled on the 25th Prairial VIII. It also contains the civil status registers, which will not be taken into account in the following, as they are listed and described in section 50. The second part was built successively in the following years until 1814. In each year a file list of the yearly created and closed files was made. The division into two is undoubtedly a consequence of the Napoleonic administrative reform of 1800 (transition from municipal administration to Mairie). Year after year, the secretariat and the offices of the municipal administration/Mairie created a file volume on certain subjects, so that a kind of subject series register was created. At the end of the year the volumes were handed over to the "Archives" (= registry). Therefore, when the list was drawn up, only the current files of Year VIII were located in the individual offices. In addition to files, a large number of official registers were kept. They played a far greater role in the French administration than in the German administration, since they served on the one hand as the administration's most important auxiliary and finding aids, but on the other hand also reproduced contents, so that the actual subject files, in which the incoming and (initially also) outgoing letters were stored, probably only rarely had to be accessed. All incoming and outgoing letters have been registered in the official records referred to here. Among them the general register "Régistre Général" is to be mentioned first as letter (entrance) diary. A number was assigned to each incoming letter in the Secretariat. The number was noted on the received letter with the addition "R.G.". In addition, a brief summary, the sender, the date of the letter and the office to which it was assigned were recorded in the General Register. Where a reply to a letter received has been drawn up or a decision taken, its number has also been recorded in the General Register. The numbers of the "normal" letters ("lettres") were replaced by "corr." (=correspondance), those of the resolutions ("arrêtés") are marked "arr. The concepts of "lettres" and "arrêtés" are attached to the respective subject file volumes only until Vendémiaire VII/September 1798 (applies to Lettres) or until the end of Year VII beginning of Year VIII/October 1799 (applies to Arrêtés). In addition, they were recorded in fair copy in two other series of official registers also kept by the Secretariat, the Correspondence and Advisory Register. On this basis, the numbering of "lettres" and "arrêtés" already mentioned was also carried out. The letter received to which an outgoing letter referred can be seen on the one hand in the Registre Général and on the other hand in the letter received itself, on which, in addition to the 'R.G.' number, the 'Arr.-' number also appears. or "Corr." No. was noted. The Mairie continued to keep the General Register and the "répertoire", a kind of subject register, but decided not to keep the resolution and correspondence registers. This made the concepts of "lettres" and "arrêtés" the only evidence of the letters and regulations issued. In order to keep track of them, their drafts could no longer be filed in the subject file volumes together with the letters received in response to which they were initiated, but had to be organised separately. The concepts of the outgoing letters were thus numbered consecutively from September 1798 and October 1799 (see above) and formed two series in which the drafts of the "lettres" and "arrêtés" were filed chronologically and (mostly) summarised monthly. If one follows 60/113, a further change occurred with the establishment of the Mairie: The secretariat/police office and Bien Public office files are kept by the secretariat, while the financial office still seems to have its own registry. The files created and kept at the secretariat are usually stored in beige paper sheets - often printed forms that have been turned over. Until the year XI, the respective subject series file was held together with a glued-on paper strip, which was provided with the file title. They've been numbered since year X. There are about 60 subjects for the secretariat, whereby the number fluctuates, since new subjects were added from case to case or older subjects were omitted, thus there were series splits or series associations, over which 60/113 offers a good overview. The subject files of a year were most likely bundled and stored in these bundles (inscription: year) in the old registry/archive. Probably for this reason, part of the "French Archive" was only grouped together in file aprons before the new indexing. The Commissioner of the Executive Board of the Municipal Administration apparently also had his own registry. Subject files were also created for him. The files shall be numbered after the title of each file, preceded by the abbreviation "No." . Their duration often exceeds one year, often covers years VI to VIII and thus the entire term of office of the Commissioner. Also on the documents of these files one finds numbers of a general register, so that it can be assumed that the commissioner of the executive directorate had its own general register and thus its own document administration (a kind of own secretariat). The holdings also include files from the provenance of the Administrative Commission of the School Fund, which were left in the holdings because of their proximity to the city administration. In the case of these files, there was no longer a recognizable order of files or registries. The files of the negotiations of the municipal council are wrapped in blue cardboard and were apparently kept separately from the other files of the administration. Some files of the collection, especially those concerning accounting, are wrapped in light blue cardboard and have German lettering. Also the formulation of the titles of the acts indicates that they were written in Hessian time (after 1815). There is much to suggest that these were files that were needed by the city administration during the Hessian period. This, of course, required a review of the French files. At the beginning of the 20th century (around 1920?), the librarian Heinrich Heidenheimer presumably attempted to dissolve the old subject files, which had been laid out on a year-by-year basis, and to merge them according to new subject matters. From the documents which were not (or could not be?) assigned to a "large" subject, he tried to create individual files. Not affected by this reorganization were the official books, the Arrêtés and Lettres series, and (probably) 23 bundles, which only remained ordered by year. The result of this attempt at classification is documented in the old register "Französisches Archiv - Bestand 60". The bundles in which the new subjects were grouped were numbered from 1-148 (one number per subject, so several bundles could have the same number if the subject was supposed to be the same). In part, however, a number did not conceal a reference file, but rather a very thin - already mentioned - single case file containing only a few sheets or even only one printed matter. The number of this file was mostly completed with a Roman "II". At the time of the redrawing, the individual case files were often located within the beige file apron in orange, strongly acidic folders (60s?) with filler lettering. Inside the other file aprons, envelopes made of crumbled packing paper with a high acid content, which could date from around 1920, were used to structure the documents. These envelopes were often labelled with only one year and were irrelevant for the context of the file. Only summarily (without signature or numbering) are listed in the directory - as mentioned - Lettres and Arrêtés, official books, military matters, matters concerning the inhabitants, accounting (also printed matter), taxes (also printed matter), the port and schools/lessons. Eight bundles were only labeled with letters and sorted alphabetically. According to the register, these were "requests to the administration, sorted by personal names (e.g. passports)". This series, too, was first created at the beginning of the 20th century by the order works. An example of how it was done: In a bundle with the old signature 138 (138-subjects: medical police/138,1; midwives/138,2; vaccination/138,3; medicine/138,4 and 138,5) there were ONLY old file covers with the following titles and registry signatures: IX/...X/14, XI/14 : Police medicinale XI/12: Police medicinale, vaccine, Maison d'accouchement, pharmacie XII/14: Police médicinale, vaccine, accouchement XIII/14, XIV/15: Police médicinale, pharmacie, vaccine, accouchement, épidémie, épizootie, glacière 1807-1812/13, 1814/13: Police médicinale, pharmacie, vaccine, accouchement, épidémie, épizootie, enfants trouvés, glacière, quinquina The original subject files were thus dissolved according to the new subjects 138,1-138,5, the original file covers were separated. (In other cases, the file covers also remained in part of the closed file.) Where the documents on livestock epidemics, foundlings and glaciers remained is not apparent at first. Unfortunately, it must be noted that the content of the parts of the file which were among the various subjects did not always correspond to those subjects! It is probable that the "annual bundles" still found at the time of the new listing should also be dissolved. The order within these bundles was chaotic. This disorder has either already existed in the French old registry (the disordered documents would then never have been assigned to a subject file...) or has arisen from the attempts of archivists to organize them. Or both "procedures" come together. The main subjects in the unresolved annual bundles were: "Police civile en générale", "Affaires mixtes", "Certificat, renseignements sur des individus, "Pièces à communiquer", "Publication ...". These are therefore precisely those subjects which can hardly be assigned to other "large" subjects and which were probably not of great importance for the administration at the time either, so that no great attention and working time will have been devoted to the sorting of these documents. It is likely that archivists wanted to use these documents to create the alphabetical series "Requests to the administration, sorted by personal names (e.g. passports)". Ordnungs- und Verzeichnungsarbeiten Heiner Stauder (1991-1995) Heiner Stauder began in 1991 with the order and indexing of the official book series. After the completion of this work, the drawing of the militaria was started. Various attempts at order and sorting (registration of all numbers of the Registre Général; dissolution of the Lettres and Arrêtés series and assignment to the corresponding letters received; dissolution of individual subject series, including "service militaire", "police militaire", "affaires militaires"; formation of individual case files for submission) proved to be impracticable. The listing of the "Militaria" was interrupted in order to prefer the listing to the "Medicinalia" due to user requests. The following signatures were assigned: 001-136: Amtsbücher 150-186: Militaria 201-215: Bürgerannahmen (They were arranged alphabetically by Mr. Tautorat around 1991/92 and then entered in a card index of names, which is located in the finding aid cabinet of the user room). 300-349: Documents and series, mainly health and poor affairs concerning 350-508: "arrêtés"; 509-703: "lettres"; the no. 350-703 were recorded by Mr. Jung in autumn 1995. The development of a printed matter collection for the French period according to the model of the Landesherrlichen Verordnungssammlung (LVO) was started by leaving only one copy of printed ordinances or news, as far as they were present several times in the file volume, in the file. The rest have been separated. The documents of the Mainzer Veteranenverein found in the "French Archive" were spun off and assigned to the corresponding estate. Mr. Stauder also began with the separation of individual documents, which were only to be assigned to a file bundle after completion of the recording, and with the dissolution of the old FA60 bundles according to subject matter. The author has also continued his recording of subtitles and alto and registry signatures (see below). After the described experiences and on the basis of the peculiarities of the found stock, the author renounced to form (new) series - however it may have been - or to restore the old registry order - also only in rudimentary form. Instead, a numerus currens distortion was performed on the basis of the found condition. The merging of units that belonged together in terms of content thus took place only after the title listings had been completed - on the basis of the classification and the three - very detailed - indices. The subject file bundles listed in the old directory FA 60 were dissolved, since the file aprons contained a wide variety of subjects, which were often only roughly summarized under one catchword. The bundles were reviewed, units with related contents within the bundles - some of them still in the original file covers of the registry - were left together and newly recorded (the old archive signature is of course always indicated). The still unrecorded militaria had already been pre-ordered by Mr. Stauder and reassembled according to the facts. The signatures 269-273 and 284-285 were made by him, left so by me and listed. Individual documents within the various bundles, which differed completely in content from the otherwise found subjects, were first separated and, after completion of the indexing process, added to the archives to which they fitted in terms of content. The old small files, the individual files mentioned above, were left as they were and re-inserted. The bundles, which were only marked with a year (probably part of the original old registration), were also dissolved according to subject matter. Recognisable units (e.g. through labelled file envelopes) were of course retained. If possible, documents that had not been (pre-)sorted were either newly created according to subject (e.g. Militaria, Year VI) or first separated and, after completion of the indexing, added to suitable archival records. In total, the stock now comprises 60 1308 units of description or serial numbers. The last current number is 1319. The numbers 140-148, 882 and 944 were not assigned. Subtitles and registry signatures Subtitles are located in brackets below the titles of the files I have assigned. They are usually the original French title(s) of the subject file(s) found on an old envelope within the newly recorded archives. It is only indicated if there is such an original envelope in the file and if the title also matches the content of the documents it contains. Due to the old order work before 1991, the original connections were torn apart - as described above - so that the original file covers only remained in part of the original files, were separated or reappeared in completely different contexts. If it was clearly visible that only part of the original subject file was present in or near the original file cover, only the applicable part of the original file title is also indicated as a subtitle. On the original file covers, in most cases the year and the number from the list of subject series registries were indicated in addition to the file title (for example as year "an 14", as number "21", as title "Corps de metier"). As far as such a file cover was available and fitted to the content or partial content of the newly recorded archive, this registry signature was indicated as follows: XIV/21 (XIV for the year 14 of the French Republic, 21 for the number from 60/113). For years VI to IX, the year and the "heading" under which the subject in 60/113 is to be found have been indicated, where recognisable. The files more frequently contained a large number of documents from the Electoral period. If it was evident that these were pre-files to the events of the French period, they were left in the archives. If no connection was discernible, the events were passed on to Dr. Dobras for classification in electoral holdings. Nachprovenienzen The Lettres series does not end with the end of French rule in Mainz and the handover of the town to German troops on 4 May 1814, but continues until the end of 1814. For this reason, all files of the year 1814 under Lord Mayor Freiherr von Jungenfeld were left in this inventory, since the registry was at least partly continued for so long according to the French model.           Preliminary remark: In 1965, the estate of Berthold von Fetzer was handed over to the Main State Archives by Mrs. Friedel Schloßberger-Hoffmann, the granddaughter of Berthold von Fetzer, retired superior. The printed matter and books (including printed matter by Carl August and Berthold von Fetzer) submitted by Mrs. Schloßberger-Hoffmann at that time were classified in the service library of the Main State Archives. The collection contains 40 volumes of diaries from 1868 to 1925 (with gaps), five volumes of notebooks from 1918 to 1923 as well as three photos of Berthold von Fetzer, and the entries of Fetzer on his activities as court physician of King Karl in 1883, 1885 to 1891 (volumes 5-15). Unfortunately the corresponding volume covering the period from April 1883 to February 1885 is missing. According to the correspondence with Mrs. Schloßberger-Hoffmann, it was not handed over to the Main State Archives. The diaries, which were kept in detail in the years 1883 and 1885 to 1891, especially during the King's winter stays in southern France and Italy, contain numerous information about the person of King Charles, his illnesses, his daily routine and his attitude towards the people around him - especially towards Queen Olga, Charles Woodcock (Baron de Savage), Wilhelm Freiherr von Spitzemberg and Julius Albert Freiherr von Griesinger. Fetzer was consulted almost daily by the king, especially during his winter stays in the south, while he did not maintain such close contact with the king during the remaining months when the king was in Stuttgart, Friedrichshafen or Bebenhausen. In addition, the diaries Volumes 5-15 also give interesting insights into farm life. These diaries, which are the most important source about the last years of King Karl, were written by Professor Dr. Paul Sauer for his book "Regent with mild sceptre. For Fetzer's activity as court physician under King Wilhelm II, however, there are no comparable entries except for a diary (volume 17), which contains some information about diseases of Queen Charlotte. This is probably due to the fact that Fetzer was consulted less frequently by the last royal couple of Württemberg and at that time was primarily active as head of the medical department of the newly created Karl Olga Hospital in Stuttgart. In addition to the diaries on court life, the two volumes with entries on Fetzer's work as senior physician at the Fourth Württemberg Field Hospital in the War of 1870/71 (Volumes 1 and 2), in which he reports on his activities in the field hospitals and in the Solitude reserve hospital - including the operations he performed - also deserve attention. In addition to the above-mentioned entries by Fetzer, all of which are in some way connected with his work as a doctor, the diaries naturally also contain numerous references to his family life and provide insights into Fetzer's personality, his diverse interests and political attitudes. In addition to the sometimes very detailed descriptions of his numerous travels in Germany and other European countries, here are notes and comments on his reading in the fields of medicine and natural sciences. literature, art or art history, philosophy and history. There are also frequent reports in the diaries about visits to theatre, opera and concerts, as well as visits to art exhibitions and museums. They convey an impressive picture of a typical educated citizen of the imperial period and are therefore of importance for cultural, mental and social history. The descriptions of his travels and even more the notes and commentaries on his reading - like a red thread, so to speak - run through almost all of his diaries, whereby in the diaries of the years 1913 to 1925 (volumes 27-40) - possibly due to a lack of reportable external experiences of Fetzer - they occupy a large space. In addition to the diaries, Fetzer also kept pure notebooks with notes for his reading between 1918 and 1923 (vol. 41-45).           Best. 1825 contains files from the estate of Peter Faecke (born 1940) - writer, editor, composer, journalist, reporter, screenwriter, editor and publisher - which form the basis of his work as an author, especially manuscripts and material collections. The estate covers a term from 1961 to 2010.I. In addition, a more specific subdivision of the manuscripts and material collections was made, oriented to the genre, and the units were pre-sorted accordingly. Afterwards an order was operated according to chronological principle and the order after final, sequential numbers was added. Subsequently the data base distortion took place in the archive software ActaPro. The two overarching classification points General, Correspondence and Criticism as well as Works and Collections of Materials were compiled, and the latter was subdivided into novels, radio contributions, screenplays and non-fiction texts. The units were then recorded and assigned to the respective classification points in the same way as the presorting, with the title field usually corresponding to the specific publication title and the exact content being made accessible by means of content and thesaurus notes. The formulation deliberately did not distinguish between manuscripts and typoscripts in the literal sense of the word, but referred to any draft text or concept, whether handwritten or typewritten, as manuscripts. Finally, cross-continuance indexes of objects, locations and persons were carried out and the inventory information was displayed on the meta level. From 1961 to 1965 he studied Romance Languages, German and Philosophy in Göttingen, Berlin, Hamburg and Paris. In 1965 Faecke became the youngest editor to date of Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne and remained loyal to WDR until 1990 as an editor in the Department of Culture and Science. His main role was that of rapporteur on Third World culture. He was significantly involved in the development and expansion of the literary program in radio at all. From 1982 to 1985, he also managed a media development project for German Development Aid in Peru, which was intended to serve the expansion of the state broadcasting system there, but had to be discontinued prematurely due to a worsening civil war. Peter Faecke also worked as a novelist during his studies and continues to do so successfully today. Since 1969 he has been a member of the Writers' Association P.E.N. Centre Germany and the Association of German Writers (VS). An exact temporal delimitation to the existence A 1 is not possible, since the unit file plan of the KGSt was introduced by individual offices at different times, some offices did not introduce the unit file plan of the KGST yet and into the unit file plan also older files were transferred. - Information on the history of the holdings (with references to literature): In the past, the old files were not recorded in the Hof City Archives. Only the lists of the former "Reposed Registry" were used as finding aids. These are sorted by "subjects", within the subjects by Numerus currens (consecutive number). They are incomplete because files added later have not been fully recorded. In addition, only the titles of the files that were printed on the covers were written off, some of them incorrectly read. Contains notes completely missing. The runtime specifications are often incorrect. The list according to subjects and within the subjects according to the serial numbers has the disadvantage that empty space must be left between the subjects. In order to remedy this situation, the files have been listed since 1994 according to archival aspects. Newly found files are incorporated, superfluous files are collected (thrown away). The structure according to subjects is carefully adapted to the actually existing files and the current usage of language. The signatures are assigned according to Numerus currens without taking the compartments into account in order to avoid empty space on the shelves. This distortion, however, will take several years.           Foreword Origin and history of the holdings Provenance or inventory creator of the holdings B was the Greven administrative office (or Greven municipal administration for files after the dissolution of the Greven office on 15 May 1954). The collection begins with the introduction of a standing registry in 1932. The older files in Prussian thread-stitching were recorded as a separate collection by Joseph Prinz in 1938 ("old registry", today inventory A). Stock B is the older part of the files of the Greven administrative and municipal administration from 1932 to approx. 1986, which were indexed by finding lists according to the model file plan of 1954 (publisher: NRW Landkreistag, NRW Städtebund, Gemeindetag Nordrhein und Gemeindetag Westfalen, see file C 13023) and which extend up to 1952. The more recent files created after 1952 are to be found in stock C, whereby overlaps of the running times could not be avoided. The model file plan consists of ten main groups. In 1954, the intention was to 'gradually reorganise the file plan of the local administration in accordance with this model file plan' (letter of 7 August 1954 from the municipal director in C 13023). This was implemented in the following years. The main groups are: 0 General administration 1 Public safety and order, Civil status 2 Schools 3 Culture and sport 4 Social welfare, Youth welfare, Equalisation of burdens 5 Health and veterinary administration 6 Building and surveying administration 7 Economy and transport 8 Economic activity and public institutions 9 Finances and taxes The files from the period from 1932 to 1952 were inserted into the order of the model file plan in 1965-1975 by the honorary archivist Karl Schwartze, who formed the inventory. He had agreed this measure with the Landesamt für Archivpflege, namely the scientific archivist Dr. August Schröder. Regarding the original registry order of these files, Schwartze notes in the preliminary remark to the reorganization of the registry of January 1975 (ZwA 32842) that it had corresponded "roughly to the order of the repertory created by Dr. Prinz" (today inventory A), which consists of five main groups (I: Reichs- und allgemeine Verwaltung, II: Kommunalverwaltung, III: Abgaben und Steuern, IV: Polizei- und Gerichtswesen, V: Militärwesen). However, these classification features are only likely to be found in the oldest files of inventory B. In October 1931, the Greven office received a "completely operational administrative registry" according to the Regis decimal system (B 3162, pp. 2-31). The official regulations for the official administration of the Greven Office of 9 April 1936 also refer in § 3 to the list of files drawn up by a main file plan "for the entire administration according to the system of ten" (cf. B 3160, p. 4). In the summer of 1936, the administration ordered a file plan for municipal administrations from the Soennecken company in Bonn, which was structured according to the Dewey decimal system and divided into seven main groups: general administration, police, education and culture, welfare, construction, municipal economy, financial administration. It is unclear whether he replaced the Regis decimal system and changed the registry order. (B 3162, page 43). In any case, in 1938 the use of the uniform file plan apparently published in 1937 by the German Association of Municipalities "was not undertaken and was also not intended", among other things "because the registry of the Greven Office was still relatively new" (cf. B 3162, pp. 46f.). A complete file list has not been preserved, but the preserved parts of the file list show that the file plan remained in force until 1954. The assigned file numbers had five digits, the first three of which indicated the main file group, file group and file subject group, followed by a separator (usually a dash or slash) and the two-digit numbering of the file within the subject group. Examples of individual file directories provide the following files: B 3161: Main group 1: General administration (1945) ZwA 25045: Main group 3, schools and education (1939, contains register sheets from 1931) ZwA 25057-25059: Main group 7, construction (1939-1954/1963) The foreword to the finding aids compiled by Schwartze corresponding to the 10 main groups of the file plan, dated January 1975 (ZwA 32842). Although this date does not mark the end of the work on the collection, it does represent a striking cut that can be equated with a regular transfer to the City Archive. The holdings comprise 3164 units of description with a running time of 1932-1952 as core period, about 500 files each extend into the period before to 1830 and the period after to 1995. The volume amounts to about 100 linear metres. The priorities are derived from the ten main groups mentioned above and fully cover the administrative activities of the Greven administration. History and tasks of the registry draughtsman The Greven administration administered the Greven office as a local authority for the area of the present-day city of Greven and the municipalities belonging to the Greven office. Since the separation and division into three parts of the municipality of Greven in 1894, these have been the municipalities of Greven-Dorf, Greven left of the Ems (with the building communities of Aldrup, Westerode, Herbern and Hembergen and, from 1925, the settlement of Reckenfeld), Greven right of the Ems (with the building communities of Pentrup, Wentrup, Hüttrup, Schmedehausen, Bockholt, Fuestrup, Guntrup and Maestrup) and the municipality of Gimbte. In 1950, the municipality of Greven-Dorf received city rights and in 1952 merged with the municipalities of Greven rechts der Ems and Greven links der Ems ("Reunification") to form the city of Greven. In 1954 the Greven office was dissolved and an administrative community was formed between the town of Greven and the municipality of Gimbte, which was finally incorporated into Greven in 1975. The extensive tasks and responsibilities of a municipal administration can be determined concretely from the administrative structure and business distribution plans or organization plans of the Greven administration. The registration of the files from 1931 was started in 1961 at the suggestion of the city director Dr. Werra and continued from 1965 by the teacher and honorary archivist Karl Schwartze until 1975, from 1976 to 1986 by the retired registrar and part-time archivist Heinrich Schmücker. Schwartze formed the inventory with registry items until about 1970, arranged it and in 1975 compiled the find lists ("repertories") for the ten main groups. There are no indications regarding its evaluation criteria or cassations. The same applies to Schmücker's supplements until 1986. The order according to the model file plan from 1954, also for the files from 1931 onwards, has already been explained above. The division of the holdings along the cut-off year 1952 was a decision made in 1990 by the archivists Christoph Spieker and Angelika Haves. Thus, inventory B was separated from the more recent files for the period 1932-1952 in order to make it quickly usable through the computer indexing, which also began in 1990. Since inventory B covers the period of National Socialism, which is already decimated by wild cassations that are difficult to reconstruct, it was also decided not to make any further cassations for files of this duration. The new indexing from finding list 0 was carried out from 1990 to mid-1999 by Christoph Spieker (B 3000-B 3908). Stefan Schröder continued his deep development in August 1999 and completed it in October 2010. With the completion of the distortion of finding list 1, the distortion was changed to a flat development (from B 4381). In the finding lists 2 to 9, therefore, as a rule, no or only a few contained notes were made. To a small extent, title changes were made when these did not sufficiently reflect the content of individual files. The main groups, groups and subgroups of the model file plan were retained as the classification. With the new indexing from 1990 onwards, new signatures (from B 3000 onwards) were assigned instead of the ambiguous old file numbers, which, however, are available in the EDP indexing as "old archive signatures" for the purpose of concordance. An exception is the signature B 4937, in which the maps and plans taken from various files are listed. Since this compilation is cross classification groups, this file has been placed in front of the classification groups in the index under the heading "Unsystematized". It should also be noted that there are special features in classification group 0-6 (elections and votes): The classification subgroup 0-61 (elections to the Bundestag) also contains the Reichstag and Landtag elections of 1933 with the signature B 3691; 0-62 (Landtag elections) also contains the referendum on the state constitution of North Rhine-Westphalia 1950 with the signature B 3689 in addition to the election to the Landtag; the classification subgroups 0-63 (municipal elections) and 0-64 (other elections) contain district, office and municipal elections in various combinations. As early as 1965, the files were stored lying in labeled folders, which contained metal parts and plastic hangers that were not suitable for archiving. The metal parts contained in the files were removed parallel to the re-drawing from 1990. Partially, but not continuously, oversized maps and plans were taken from the files, filed separately flat and listed as B 4937 with reference to the provenance context. Since 2007, the holdings - with the exception of bound official books - have been deacidified in stages within the framework of the NRW state initiative "Substanzerhalt des Landes NRW". This work is expected to be completed by early 2015. In the course of this conservation measure, the folders and hangers were exchanged for folders and hangers suitable for archiving, provided with the new signature and copies of the old labeled folders pre-stitched. At the same time the file sheets were paginated so that an improved citability is given. Methods of use and citation Individual archival documents are blocked due to statutory periods of protection. Blocking notices were not made continuous, and the blocking notices contained in the finding aid book were only partially checked. The absence of blocking notices does not therefore automatically mean a right of inspection, an inspection is carried out individually. The digitisation of B 3091 to B 3095 (protocol books official representation Greven 1935-1954, municipal council Greven-Dorf 1935-1950, municipal council Greven left 1935-1952, municipal council Greven right of the Ems 1935-1952 and municipal representation Greven 1950-1954) from classification group 0-22 (supreme municipal organs) is currently being realised, so that they can be used online in the archive portal NRW at any time by 2015 at the latest. Literature references to Adolf Grimme's estate papers, which largely reflect his entire life's path, reached the Secret State Archives in several stages. A first very small part (approx. 0.10 running metres) was already handed over by the Federal Archives in 1969 (according to a letter from the archive dated 26.1.1976), further parts were taken over directly by Mrs. Josefine Grimme from 1974. The last parts of the estate listed were initially deposited in the archives (Depositalvertrag of 20 June 1974). This deposit was converted into a gift by Mrs. Josefine in June 1981. The autograph collection created by Grimmes was sold to the GStA in 1981 (also by Mrs Josefine). The entire holdings have thus become the property of the archive. Sabine Preuß, then Heidemarie Nowak, under the guidance of Dr. Cécile Lowenthal-Hensel, took charge of the holdings in the Secret State Archives. Josefine Grimme herself also carried out the orderly work once again. In addition, she identified signatures and put together correspondence in elaborate work. The distortion was finished by Inge Lärmer and Ute Dietsch. The initial decision to waive the inclusion of notes in correspondence was reversed when the titles were entered into the database in consultation with the head of unit, Dr. Iselin Gundermann. All files which had to be checked again in this context, especially for technical reasons, were checked for the necessity of containing notes in the interest of use and supplemented accordingly. This applies in particular to correspondence with artists or with very high-ranking personalities - personalities of contemporary history - or files with contents that are valuable for scientific analysis. Josefine Grimme stressed in her letters (including a letter of 27 July 1980) that the files were "essentially still as my husband had seen them". The Grimme couple deliberately designed Adolf Grimme's own registry and archive. After the sources were taken over by the archive, the aim was therefore not to destroy the order laid down by Adolf and Josefine Grimme. When using the holdings, it should therefore be noted that - if available - the inscriptions on master folders, the inscription of folders or fascicles or inserted notes with a summary of the contents of the respective folders (i.e. "file titles" issued by Grimme[s]) should be retained as far as possible and set in quotation marks in the reference book, if necessary - as an offer to the user - explained by "Contains note". The Josefine Grimme collections (group 1.1.3) were started by Adolf Grimme and therefore also left in context. It was agreed between Josefine Grimme and the archive that "the files blocked by her husband at the time and all personnel files after 1945" would not yet be made accessible for use (letter of the GStA of 13 March 1975 to Ms Grimme). In principle, these blocks have been maintained until 2010, even in compliance with data protection regulations (in particular groups 2.5.4 to 2.5.6). In the find-book, especially in the Correspondence group, the number of pieces (not the number of sheets) of existing documents can be seen in the file titles. "K" means that (mostly partially) there are only copies in the correspondence (the originals are then mainly in the autograph collection, which contains almost exclusively letters to Grimme - group 6.4). Reference files that Grimme kept from his time as Prussian Minister of Culture until his time as Lower Saxony Minister of Culture were not separated; they are classified in the time of the beginning of file formation (Prussian Ministry). The possible overlaps between the individual groups must also be taken into account during use. Since Josefine Grimme formed the files for the correspondence herself (with her own portfolio, counting of pieces and often also sheet counting, as can still be seen from the portfolio captions), it was decided that later or in other contexts letters from the respective correspondence partner would be listed in the archive as an extra volume and would not be incorporated into the existing portfolios. This explains, for example, overlaps in the runtimes of the individual volumes with the letters of a correspondence partner. Grimmes also retained the grouping of letters from some of his correspondence partners with the same initial letter into the subgroup "Individuals", in some cases supplemented by the note "Insignificant", since the latter documents were of no importance to Grimmes in the context in which they were written. The authors of the letters may well be historically important personalities. No cassations were made in the archive. Tapes of Adolf Grimme's speeches and performances were given to the Adolf Grimme Institute in Marl by Mrs Grimme in 1979.           Administrative history: Two years after the foundation of the Hamburg University in 1921, the university authority was established. She supervised the University, Adult Education Centre, Technical Lectures, General Lectures and Scientific Institutions. In 1933, the Higher Education Authority was merged with the State Education Authority to form the State Education Authority, which consisted of two departments: General Administration and Education, and Higher Education. Further charges by the Berlin Document Center followed in 1978, 1980 and 1988. 68 bundles of files were handed over by the Bavarian Main State Archives in Munich in 2003. These were applications for admission and the questionnaire attached to the application for admission. As before, the personal records of the former Berlin Document Center include above all the NSDAP's Reichskartei (Central and Gaukartei), which is part of the Membership Office, the applications for membership as well as processes of individual party members, such as the loss of membership books, payments of dues, recognition of former memberships, etc. The NSDAP's membership records are still recorded in the personal records of the former Berlin Document Center. The first structure of the stock resulted from the organization of the office of the Reich Treasurer of the NSDAP. Since 1937 this included the office of the chief of staff, the main offices I - VIII as well as two special commissioners, since 1939 also the office for lottery affairs, which had been separated from the main office I, and the office physician of the Reich leadership. The files from the access of the BDC originate from the areas of the Chief of Staff as well as from the main offices I, II, IV, V and VII. These are only relatively small parts of the files created in the individual offices with the exception of the files of the main office V. This major part consists of files relating to the NSDAP's asset management. Such files were created by the chief of staff and in the main offices I, III and V. The main part of them are files of the main office V on the administration of the party's own properties, buildings and homes. These are not only properties which were acquired or rented by the NSDAP for sale or by donation, but also those which originated from confiscated Jewish property within the territory of the Reich which had been transferred to the NSDAP or from hostile property in the territories incorporated and occupied before and during the Second World War. In a smaller subgroup of files, the administration is mainly reflected in the movable assets of dissolved associations and other organisations in the incorporated and occupied territories that have been transferred to the NSDAP. Additional information can be found in the corresponding volumes of the Hauptamt I and the Staff Chief, the latter also containing an incomplete list of NSDAP properties. The files of the Main Office III contain property overviews of the Gaue, districts and local groups of the NSDAP for the period from December 1936 to December 1938. In addition to annual and monthly balance sheets, the number of party members of the Gaue and districts is also indicated monthly, so that for the years 1937 and 1938 the growth of the NSDAP in the Gaue and districts can be followed. At that time, the receipts of the central accounting were cashed in the central, cash and asset management of the Hauptamt I. In the course of the further levies by the Berlin Document Center, the inventory was revised in 1988. However, the indexing was so different with regard to many different agents that the completion of a finding aid book was initially postponed. The existing classification according to the organization chart of the Reich Treasurer was adopted and only slightly changed. The individual head offices essentially worked according to the file plan, so that the classification of the files, provided they were still in their original state, was relatively unproblematic within the classification. It was more difficult to assign the files taken over from the BDC. In the BDC, files were for the most part newly created according to the pertinence principle, so that especially in the area of the Membership Office, documents from the Arbitration Office, the Card Index Office and the Admission Office can be found in one file. Since the files were already in use, however, a reorganization of individual files was dispensed with, also for reasons of time. Only too large files were separated. The files were indexed in accordance with the valid indexing guidelines for the Federal Archives and included corrections (nominal style, valid grammar and spelling rules) and the adaptation of titles (often abbreviations) in accordance with the technical possibilities of the BASYS S database.           Content and evaluation Introduction In anthropological research, concern for the deceased is regarded as one of the most important indicators of the beginning of human culture. By taking care of the burial of the mortal remains of members of one's own community, prehistoric man already revealed ideas of a beyond and a connection between individual and community that went beyond death. In the Judeo-Christian culture, burial in a coffin developed into the usual form of burial, which had to take place in a special, specially designated area, the cemetery. The inviolability of the peace of the dead, which is indispensable for Jewish burials in contrast to Christian ones, means that Jewish cemeteries are not cleared and reoccupied after certain periods of rest. As far as they escaped National Socialist barbarism, Jewish cemeteries in Baden-Württemberg were able to grow in many cases over many generations up to the present day. Since it was customary until the 20th century to mention the name of the buried person as well as the name of the father on the gravestones, these inscriptions also represent sources of the highest value for historical-genealogical research. All these cemeteries are today protected cultural monuments. On the basis of a resolution of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament in 1989, which dealt with the documentation and preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Baden Württemberg, the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office was commissioned to provide comprehensive documentation of all relevant gravestones. The main basis of this work were prints of photographs taken by the Central Archive for the Study of the History of Jews in Germany in Heidelberg between 1985 and 1992 of almost all Jewish gravestones in Baden-Württemberg. After completion of the project in May 2008, the copy set with around 85,000 copies was handed over to the Ludwigsburg State Archives together with the paper cemetery documentation prepared by the State Monument Office and a database with documentation results for a large part of the graves. In addition to historical, art and linguistic details, this database also contains genealogically relevant facts. In the course of a project financed by the Kulturgutstiftung Baden-Württemberg, this valuable collection was made available for online use as EL 228 b II in the State Archives of Ludwigsburg in 2011. The database, consisting of many individual tables, was prepared in a format suitable for the finding aid system of the State Archives, the entire photo stock was scanned, each photo was given an individual signature and - as far as possible - cemetery by cemetery manually linked with the database contents provided. Thus the condition of the gravestones, which has been confirmed photographically throughout 1985-1992, can be called up worldwide via the Internet in connection with the indexing data for further research. These are photographs of gravestones from over 141 cemeteries (the number of cemeteries in Baden-Württemberg differs slightly depending on the counting method used), of which 89 are located in Baden and 52 in Württemberg. The place names used in their alphabetical order follow those of the register of inventory books I and II ("Dokumentation Friedhöfe in Deutschland") of the Zentralarchiv zur Erforschung der Juden in Deutschland, Heidelberg, using today's official names (e.g. "Bad Wimpfen HN" instead of "Wimpfen (Bad)"). The census (001-143) in round brackets was used for the interlocking with the mentioned register otherwise, whereby the two cemeteries with the numbers 012 (Bremen) and 086 (Michelstadt/Hessen) are missing here, since they lie outside of Baden Württemberg. The first external web link at cemetery level (uniformly referred to as "Zentralarchiv HD") refers to the relevant entry in the online directory of Jewish cemeteries maintained by the Zentralarchiv zur Erforschung der Geschichte der Juden in Deutschland, Heidelberg. In addition to further references to the cemetery in question, details of the respective documentation process, such as the year in which the photographs were taken and the names of the persons responsible for the so-called "basic documentation", can also be found there. The grab descriptions published in the present collection can be traced back to the work of these editors. In the scans, an automatic compensation of brightness and contrast was omitted in order to obtain as much image information as possible, i.e. as many grayscales as possible. Many images therefore appear to be overexposed or underexposed at first, but this can be adjusted in the image presentation module using the "Brightness" selection button. This preserves a maximum of gray levels, of which a part would otherwise be lost, especially when shooting under extreme light conditions (dark gravestones in front of a snowy background/bright sky or the upper half of the stone in full sunlight, the lower half in the drop shadow of a neighbouring stone, etc.).           Authority history: In 1882, a number of merchants, business representatives and other dignitaries from the Stuttgart region founded the "Württembergischer Verein für Handelsgeographie und Förderung Deutscher Interessen im Ausland" (Württemberg Association for Commercial Geography and Promotion of German Interests Abroad). The objective was "the promotion of geography, economy and culture". Within a few years, a rapidly growing collection of ethnological objects from all over the world was created in addition to other association activities, such as an extensive lecture programme. The collection was initially housed in rented premises on the gallery of the Gewerbehalle and was officially declared a museum of ethnology based on scientific principles on 1 June 1889 (guest book in Bü 1209).After many years of planning, the search for a suitable building site (the discussion included locations such as the site of the former Neue Lusthaus and the burnt-out Hoftheater), the provision of the necessary funds and a major architectural competition, a neoclassical museum building was erected at today's Hegelplatz/Herdweg site according to the plans of the young Stuttgart architect Eser. The main operator of the new building project, the chairman of the association (since 1890) and generous sponsor Count Karl von Linden, died in January 1910 after the laying of the foundation stone of a serious illness. It was decided, in appreciation of his merits, to name the new ethnological museum "Linden-Museum". On 28 May 1911 the opening ceremony took place in the presence of the Württemberg royal couple. In addition to the association with board, committee and numerous members, a scientific director now joined the museum. The first museum director was the naval doctor and ethnologist Dr. Augustin Krämer. He was assisted by Heinrich Fischer, who had been recruited by Count von Linden at the turn of the century, former employee of the Natural History Cabinet and from 1932 director of the museum, as the editor of the collection accesses. The following four phases can be discerned in the eventful development of the museum: 1882 to 1911 (from the foundation of the association to the occupation of the museum's purpose-built building),1911 to 1945 (until the end of World War II with extensive war damage),1945 to 1973 (from reconstruction to the transition to the public sector),Since 1973 (State Museum of Ethnology).100 years of existence were celebrated with a large museum festival on 28 May 2011. The history of the association and the museum, from its beginnings to the present day, is documented in detail by numerous publications and anniversary commemorations (including Bü 392 and 903) as well as by the written documents and pictorial documents recorded in the classification points of Group 2.5 Special Survey. Further details can therefore be omitted at this point. Inventory history: Since the Verein für Handelsgeographie and the resulting Linden-Museum were privately initiated institutions, the creation of files did not follow the usual administrative procedures. The core of the tradition are the extensive correspondences of the chairman Count Karl von Linden and the long-time treasurer and chairman Theodor Wanner, as well as other personalities of the association committee and - connected with the opening of the museum building - the scientific director. The personal commitment of Count von Linden in maintaining worldwide contacts with German colonial officials, colonial officers, overseas merchants, captains and missionaries is reflected in the written tradition and even more in the rapidly growing ethnological collections. The later scientific correspondence documents the networking of the museum with other renowned institutions and persons as well as the extremely large activities within the framework of lecture programmes and exhibition projects. Subject files, various publications, extensive collections of newspaper clippings, memorabilia and pictorial documents round off the collection. Due to the close interlinking of association and museum, no separation of provenance was made, only the internal name "Vereinangelegenheiten" for parts of the tradition was retained. The collection also contains documents on the Daughter Institute for Foreign Relations founded in 1915/1916 on the initiative of Theodor Wanner and on the German Colonial Museum.           On the history of associations: The beginnings of associations date back to the 18th century. In the 19th century, associations were founded on a grand scale, especially in the cities, where they became an important part of bourgeois culture and self-confidence. This was particularly evident in the pre-March period, when numerous clubs (e.g. also gymnastics clubs) were of political importance, and therefore the clubs appear in official records mainly in the upper offices and district governments that supervised the police. In contrast to other federal states, there was no special association law in Württemberg. The relevant regulations were found in the Criminal and Police Act of 1839. After that, polit. Associations must report their foundation to the responsible regional office and submit their statutes. However, the presentation of the statutes could also be demanded from non-political associations if "the government had cause for well-founded concerns" (Art. 15 Police Criminal Law of 1839, Reg.bl. p. 611). Participation in associations for unlawful political purposes" was punishable by imprisonment (Art. 139, Penal Code of 1839, Reg.bl. p. 101). The first coherent regulation of the association system in Württemberg represented the Bundestag resolution of 1854, which was introduced in 1855 in Württemberg (regulation concerning the regulation of the association system). This meant, however, a tightening of the existing association law, which was however revoked after the death of King William I. again. In Württemberg, there was no longer any legal basis for restrictions on freedom of association, police surveillance of closed societies and coalitions. Official action against associations was only possible in the case of a violation of the general penal laws. An association law was not enacted. The right of association and assembly had been a Reich matter since 1871 (Art. 4 Reichsverfass.). Until the adoption of the Reichsvereinsgesetz on 19.4.1907, however, only a few special areas were regulated by the Reichsgesetz, and the register of associations was introduced together with the BGB on 1.1.1900. However, unions and political parties (not even local associations) are not included in the register of associations; they renounced the status of an association with legal capacity in order not to be subject to numerous restrictions. If an association described itself as "political", it accepted the police law supervisory and intervention norms, e.g. also the Reichsvereinsgesetz of 1907, or exposed itself to a possible objection of the administrative authority (§§ 612, 622 BGB), but if it did not describe itself as "political", the state could withdraw its legal capacity from it as soon as a political decision was taken. This formal legal discrimination, however, did not mean any significant restriction of the right to form a coalition; the trade unions thus renounced the legal form of the registered association even after 1918, although the above-mentioned paragraphs of the BGB were repealed. The district court district of Stuttgart-Stadt encompassed the area of the Stuttgart city directorate until 1924 (excluding Cannstatt, Untertürkheim and Wangen). In the course of the administrative reform of 1923/24, the district court of Stuttgart Amt was dissolved and passed to Stuttgart Stadt (new name: district court of Stuttgart I). The district court of Cannstatt was renamed the district court of Stuttgart II and comprised the Stuttgart districts right of the Neckar river and Feuerbach. The same procedure was followed for later incorporations. However, Zuffenhausen and Stammheim came at their incorporation in 1931 and 1942, respectively, despite their geographical distance to the district court Stuttgart I (today, however, they belong to the district court Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt).           Description of the stock: The military commander, France, exercised supreme authority in the parts of France occupied since 1940, with the exception of the departments of Alsace and Lorraine, which were placed under the command of the civil administrations, and the departments of Nord and Pas de Calais, for which the military commander was responsible in Belgium and northern France (see also the annexes listed below). The focus of the military commander's tasks was not so much on military matters (e.g. defence against enemy landing attempts, coastal protection) as on administrative and economic matters. After the German occupation of southern France in 1942, the German General was in charge of military affairs for the Commander-in-Chief West in Vichy. More than half of the documents that have been archived in the Federal Archives come from the Military Commander's administrative staff (activity reports, control of French legislation, administration of justice, police matters, management of the French economy, mining, labour operations, recording of documents of German interest in French libraries and archives).           Administrative history: In connection with the separation of state and church, a state school system with general compulsory schooling was created in Hamburg relatively late. The basis was the "Law on Education" of 11. 11. 1870. In 1863 the Interim High School Authority was established, which replaced the Scholarchate and from 1871 was called the High School Authority. It was divided into four sections: 1. section for scientific institutions, 2. section for higher education and from 1874 also for private education, 3. section for elementary education including teacher seminars, 4. section for rural education (until 1874 for private education), which was dissolved around 1920; only individual files were continued until 1938. From 1865 to 1914 the Oberschulbehörde was also responsible for the trade school system, which was taken over in 1914 by the Behörde für das Gewerbe und Fortbildungsschulwesen and in 1922 by the Berufsschulbehörde. In 1921, the 1st Section was spun off and integrated into the newly founded higher education authority. In 1927, in the course of an administrative reform, the main registry was merged with the administrative registries. In 1931, the Oberschulbehörde and the Berufsschulbehörde were united to form the Landesschulbehörde, which from 01.06.1933, together with the Hochschulbehörde, formed the Landesunterrichtsbehörde, which consisted of the two departments General Administration and Education and Higher Education. On 24.09.1936, the State Teaching Authority and the Authority for Church and Art Affairs were merged to form the Culture and School Authority, which thus took over the tasks of the Administration for Cultural Affairs. On 01.04.1938, the higher education system and parts of the school system were formed into the 4th (school and university) department of the state administration and the other tasks were transferred to the municipal administration. In 1945 the school administration was established, in 1947 the school authority was founded with the three departments 1. general department, 2. university department, 3. school department. From 01.01.1971 to 29.02.1980 the school administration belonged to the authority for school, youth and vocational training, from 01.03.1980 to 28.02.1989 to the authority for school and vocational training and since 01.03.1989 to the authority for school, youth and vocational training.           On April 21, 1933, Hitler appointed his personal secretary Rudolf Hess, the former head of the "Political Central Commission" of the NSDAP, as "deputy of the Führer" and authorized him to decide in his name on all matters concerning the leadership of the party. The main task of the deputy leader and his staff, formed at the headquarters of the NSDAP in Munich, was to "align the Gauleitungen, divisions and affiliated associations of the NSDAP uniformly and to give them political guidelines"(1) This function of a central authority of the internal party leadership had to be fought for and defended first and foremost against the resistance of the Reichsorganisationsleiter Robert Ley, who regarded himself as the main heir of Gregor Strasser and his concentration of power within the party. (2) The "NSDAP liaison staff" set up on 24 March 1933 in the former building of the Prussian State Ministry in Berlin was subordinated to Hess and subsequently served as the Berlin office of the Führer's deputy, without achieving or even exceeding the importance of the Munich staff, also with regard to the later coordination functions vis-à-vis the Reich government. As was already the case when Hess was commissioned to head the Central Political Commission, which had been created at the end of 1932 after Gregor Strasser's dissolution of the Reichsorganisationsleitung, which had developed into a central party-internal power apparatus, as a supervisory organ for its previous main departments III and IV,(3) Hitler's appointment of his private secretary as deputy to the leader was by no means intended to strengthen the position of the party or its Reichsleitung within the National Socialist power structure. While the comparatively generous endowment of the deputy leader's central authority of the party leadership should undoubtedly also serve to curb the power ambitions of other, personally stronger party leaders, the personality of Hess, who had always been a devoted follower of his leader without any independent power within the party leadership, offered a guarantee that a center of power alongside Hitler, as it threatened to develop in the short term in 1932 with Gregor Strasser's rise to "a kind of general secretary of the party with comprehensive powers of attorney" (4), could no longer emerge in the future. Hess could not speak of a supremacy over other "law firms" (law firm of the leader of the NSDAP, Reich Chancellery and - after Hindenburg's death - Presidential Chancellery). Even the later use of the central competences of the office of the deputy of the Führer under the energetic and ruthless leadership of Martin Bormann to develop his known personal position of power could only succeed, since Bormann consciously built up his position, but never only that of Hitler. Rudolf Hess, who was personally rather weak, was, however, granted comprehensive powers in state affairs by the Law of 1 December 1933 on Securing the Unity of Party and State. Like Röhm, the head of the SA staff, Hess was appointed Reich Minister without a portfolio in order to "ensure the closest cooperation between the Party and the State".(5) The position of the deputy leader was decisively strengthened by Hitler's unpublished circular of 27 March, which was issued by the Reichsminister in Berlin. On July 7, 1934, "the deputy of the Führer, Reich Minister Rudolf Hess", was given the position of a "participating" Reich Minister in the legislation without exception.(6) This gave Hess the opportunity to comment on all drafts of laws and ordinances and to assert the party's position. By the "Erlass über die Beteiligung des Stellvertreter des Führers bei der Ernennung von Beamten" (Decree on the Participation of the Deputy Fuehrer in the Appointment of Civil Servants) of 24 September 1935 (7), Hitler also ordered Hess to participate in the appointment of Reich and Land officials in such a way that he received a copy of the proposal for promotion or appointment with more detailed information about the civil servant and was granted a reasonable period of time to comment. As a rule, this deadline was used to obtain the opinion of the local party organisation, particularly on the political position of the candidate. After this decisive expansion of competence, the office of the deputy leader, whose staff comprised "two, three men" when Martin Bormann took over the leadership of the staff in July 1933, (8) took on firmer contours. Due to the composition and origin of the staff, Division III was hardly in a position to bring about the originally intended implementation of a radical party position in state legislation and civil servant policy. Rather, we can speak of a mediating function between party offices and ministries. Within this framework, the public authorities expected "their" officials transferred to the staff of the deputy leader to have a supportive influence on the responsible NSDAP department, which was usually actually exercised (12). Nonetheless, it is beyond doubt that the party's right to participate in the appointment and promotion of civil servants, from which only the Wehrmacht was able to keep itself free, had a considerable influence on the civil service and, among other things, had to impair its traditional view of service. Immediately after the England flight of his deputy Rudolf Hess, Hitler made the order on 12 May 1941 that the previous office of the Führer's deputy should bear the name "Party Chancellery" and be subordinated to him personally. The leader was "as before Reichsleiter Martin Bormann" (13). In his decree of 29 May 1941 "On the Position of the Head of the Party Chancellery" Hitler specified "in order to ensure the closest cooperation of the Party Chancellery with the Supreme Reich Authorities: The Head of the Party Chancellery, Reichsleiter Martin Bormann, has the powers of a Reich Minister, he is a member of the Reich Government and of the Council of Ministers for the Defence of the Reich". Hitler then affirmed that the previous head of staff of the office of the deputy leader's deputy did not receive the title of his former superior, but rather all of his powers: "Where in laws, ordinances, decrees, orders and other orders the deputy leader's deputy is named, he shall be replaced by the head of the Party Chancellery" (14). According to the NSDAP's self-image, the Party Chancellery was Hitler's office in his capacity as leader of the party. Their Hitler leader, who was directly responsible for Hitler, had "to process all fundamental plans and suggestions from the area of the party centrally" for Hitler. The instructions issued by Hitler himself or prepared on his behalf for the entire party were sent exclusively via Bormann to the departments responsible for implementation. Not only the political leadership of the party, but also all work arising from the party's supremacy towards the state was to be done in the party chancellery. During the war, these tasks included, as a matter of course, the "versatile deployment of the party organs in total internal warfare" and the work of the party in the integrated and occupied territories. In addition to the party and the Wehrmacht, the focus of the jurisdiction of the party chancellery was on "securing the unity of party and state" (15). In the Ordinance of 29 May 1941 on the Implementation of the Decree of the Führer on the Position of the Head of the Party Chancellery, the Reich Minister and Head of the Reich Chancellery Lammers and the Head of the Party Chancellery ordered the following on 16 January 1942: (16) The Party's participation in the legislation was to be effected exclusively through the head of the Party Chancellery, unless Hitler determined otherwise in individual cases. Proposals and suggestions from the area of the Party, its divisions and affiliated associations could only be forwarded via Bormann, the responsible ministries and other supreme Reich authorities, as far as the legislation was concerned. This practically amounted to a concentration of power on the person of Bormann. The party also played a central role in processing the personal data of the civil servants. In any case, the head of the Party Chancellery had the position of a b e t e i l t e Reich Minister in the preparation of state legislation in legislative work. This also applied to the laws and ordinances of the provinces and governors of the empire. In addition to these formal competences, it was stipulated that, in matters other than legislative matters, the communication between the supreme Reich and Land authorities, insofar as these were responsible regionally for several districts of the NSDAP, on the one hand, and the services of the Party, its divisions and affiliated associations, on the other hand, took place solely via Bormann if these were "fundamental and political questions". Direct traffic was expressly declared inadmissible. Thus an instrument of power equipped with far-reaching competences came under the exclusive leadership of an energetic party functionary who was just as servile upwards as he was after him under brutally ruthless party officials, who of course used it as far as possible to expand his own position of power, which of course was not exclusively based on his position as head of the party office. Bormann's rise from organizer of illegal Freikorpsgruppen and Feme desk murderers to head of the relief fund of the NSDAP and finally to chief of staff of the Führer's deputy, his constant approach to the person of Hitler - from the administration of Hitler personally from various sources funds available, the conversion of the House of Wachenfeld to the "Berghof" and "Berghof" respectively. the expansion of the entire Obersalzberg complex into Hitler's summer residence, up to Hitler's constant company in the Führer's headquarters or "special Führer train" during the war - cannot be traced here in detail (17). The coupling of these two functions - the leadership of the political coordination centre of the party (staff of the deputy leader or party chancellery) and Hitler's constant support and advice, also in personal matters - formed the basis of Bormann's special position of power, which could not easily be equated with the strengthening of the party leadership as such. Structurally, even an energetic head of staff or head of the party office was unable to change the desolate weakness of the NSDAP's Reich leadership. Even under Bormann, the party chancellery did not develop into an all-powerful, bureaucratic command center comparable to communist politburo. Bormann's special position was based on the personal, independent power of attorney as Hitler's personal clerk, which was institutionalized on April 12, 1943 with Bormann's official appointment as "Secretary of the Führer" (18). From Bormann's dominant position in the Führer's headquarters - not actually from his function as head of the Party Chancellery - the path led to the Super and Control Minister of the Reich Government, when the Bormann was not only seen by dissatisfied party and contemporaries in the final years of the war, but is also portrayed in historical studies on the Nazi regime in general (19). The two-pronged organisational structure of the office of the leader's deputy, which was essentially based on the two departments for internal party affairs and for questions of constitutional law, remained basically unchanged, even under the name of the party chancellery. In Division II, the following groups or main offices were added in accordance with the expansion of the tasks: II M (Reich Defence, Planning of Operations for the War Tasks of the Party), II W (Fundamental Questions of the Wehrmacht, Liaison Office to the OKW), II E (Foreign and People's Growth Work of the Party, including Occupied Territories), II F (Nazi Leadership in the Wehrmacht and Nazi Lead Officers) and II V (Staff Leadership Volkssturm). The offices II C and IID, on the other hand, which dealt with the party's junior leaders and personnel issues, were merged to form the II P office. The organisational overview of Division II given below is essentially taken from a note in Division III of 11 April 1945. Inventory description: Inventory history of written records management in the party office Although file plans and other registry aids have only been handed down in fragments for certain periods of time, even then, a clear picture of the written records management of the Hess and Bormann offices can be drawn. A file plan from the year 1937 is divided into two main areas (10 party, 20 state) and then divided into four levels according to the subject system. Files that could have been listed according to this plan, which was valid until about 1940, are only preserved in the form of single sheets or small processes, so that this file plan was of no particular importance for the indexing of the holdings. On the other hand, an excerpt from the file plan for matters of Reich defence (1) dating from 1939 proved to be a useful aid. It provides for up to 80 small subject series, of which 3 to 18 each are grouped into five groups (operational planning, subject areas, defence, preparation of mobilisation and general affairs); finally, collective folders for routine processes could be created as required. The systematic weaknesses that are typical of small subject series became clearly apparent in the distortion. The division of the records into "destination files", "auxiliary files" and "files for correspondence" is not convincing and could be neglected in the listing of the files of the competent Division M and Group II M respectively. File plans for the mass of the surviving records, i.e. from the time of the Party Chancellery (1941 - 1945), have not been preserved. After all, Rotulus sheets preserved for a sub-area with titles to essentially completed processes show the systematics of the underlying file plan (2). Rotulus leaves for the file numbers 1010/0 to 3230/4 have been preserved, whereby a further stage in the numerical classification was partly formed. The classification was based on the department principle. The file plan was used until the end of the war, as the comparatively closed tradition from Department III shows, and was observed in principle. The reference number consisted of the name of the respective organizational unit and the file number. The fate of the holdings since the conquest of Germany by the Allies corresponds to the history of German contemporary historical sources in the war and post-war period in general. Perhaps there is a specific feature typical of the existence of a political party in that self-destruction by party functionaries accounts for a larger proportion than destruction by enemy action. Of course, the acts of annihilation cannot be proven in detail. Since 1955, the Federal Archives have received splinter-like remnants and a few closed groups of records, essentially from offices of the victorious powers USA and Great Britain, to a lesser extent from authorities and universities in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as about two dozen individual donations from private holdings, whereby takeovers from other holdings of the Federal Archives are added. In 1955, the Federal Archives took over copies of letters from the Chief of the Security Police and the SD to Bormann, of judgments handed over to Bormann by the Reich Minister of Justice, and of other documents from the Provenance Party Chancellery, all relating to events in connection with the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, all of which - supplemented by a small amount of material from private collections - were combined in the NS 6 "Party Chancellery of the NSDAP" as a special "Collection July 20, 1944" due to their common provenance. The originals of these documents, which had already been transferred to the main archive of the NSDAP before the end of the war, were received by the Bundesarchiv in 1962 in the course of the repatriation of German files from the Federal Records Center in Alexandria, Virginia (USA). These historically highly significant materials were already made accessible in detail by Jürgen Huck in November 1955. His title recordings have been completely incorporated into this finding aid book (p. 94 ff.). The other contributions come from the University Library of Heidelberg, the American Document Center in Berlin, the Federal Records Center in Alexandria, Virginia, and the National Archives of the United States in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress there, and the British file depot in Whaddon Hall. In addition, there were a large number of smaller statements from German authorities and private owners. The holdings received a larger increase in the course of many years of organizing work from other holdings of the Federal Archives, above all from the NS 26 holdings (main archive of the NSDAP) and the "Schumacher Collection", which is to be dissolved altogether. In total, no more than 5 documents of the Party Chancellery should be preserved in the Federal Archives. This rough estimate may disregard the registries of the State Secretary Reinhardt in his capacity as "representative of the deputy of the leader or of the Party Chancellery for matters of job creation, financial and tax policy" and his personal adviser Dr. Hans Gündel, who was head of Group III E Public Finances in the Party Chancellery, remaining in inventory R 2 (Reich Ministry of Finance). Comments: (1) Both file plans in NS 6/69. (2) NS 6/803 - 804. Archival processing While the "Collection 20. July 1944" and which became known according to their core as "Kaltenbrunner Reports", were subjected to a detailed indexing, which already led in 1955 to a finding aid book with a detailed introduction and comprehensive index, the remaining parts of the inventory, fed by a multitude of duties and takeovers, were first recorded in the order of access, provided with provisional signatures, and in some cases marked summarily in terms of content - whereby, if available, the delivery directories of the delivering agency, for example the "Kaltenbrunner Reports", were usually followed. B. of the US Document Center -, Z. T. however, also downright according to archivfachlichen points of view registered. The final organizing and indexing work now carried out on this stock could therefore only partly be concerned with recording a number of accesses that had not been indexed at all up to now. The main task was rather the consolidation, standardisation and, in particular, the overall classification of the archival records - also from other holdings of the Federal Archives - which had been divided into numerous accesses and indexed to varying degrees of intensity up to that point, and which naturally necessitated an examination, but mostly also a reformulation, of the provisional titles found. This applied in particular when, on the one hand, the dissolution of predefined archive units, which had previously only been described in summary form and which had mostly been formed formally in Allied custody, into individual processes was offered, and, on the other hand, the combination of scattered parts of processes into processes or also of scattered individual processes into uniform series, some of which were provided for by the file plan, became possible. The intensive recording to Bormann of the reports of the Chief of the Security Police and the SD on the events in connection with the assassination attempt on 20 July 1944, made almost thirty years ago, was taken over in the finding aid book. Since, of course, it was not necessary to index the remaining components at this extraordinary depth, this complex of archival records described in Section C 8.1 continues to occupy a special position within the holdings, which is also clearly discernible according to formal criteria. This can be justified both on the basis of the exceptional importance of the documented object, proven by the very high user frequency, and on the remarkable quality of the sources. The "originals" of the above-mentioned documents, which arrived in the Federal Archives considerably later (1962) - the indexing in 1955 had been done on the basis of copies taken over from the Federal Archives at the time and made in American custody - had been formed according to American principles of order and were provided with their own provisional archive signatures in the Federal Archives. They have now been adapted to the order and distortion as they were created in 1955 for the distortion of the corresponding copies. This adaptation also extends to the signatures, so that the found distortion of the copies can also be applied without any restriction to the corresponding volume of originals - which now bears the same signature. In principle, attempts were made to adopt predefined registry units, to retain grown processes as archive units, and to use existing titles as a basis for title formation during indexing wherever possible. This attempt, however, could essentially only succeed with the organically grown written material from the years after 1940/41 handed down from Division III in the areas of "Foreign Trade" (C 12), "Money and Capital Markets" (C 14), "Construction Industry" (C 18) and "Housing Construction, Housing Management, Settlements" (C 19) - i.e. from the offices III B 1 and III B 2 - with limitations also in the surviving records of the main offices and the main offices with restrictions. Groups II M (mobilization of the party and distribution of the Reich) and II F (Nazi leadership and education of the Wehrmacht). As a rule, only scattered and incoherent remnants from the other organisational units, i.e. also from the registries of the deputy leader, his staff leader or the head of the party chancellery, the department heads, from the groups II A and II B concerned with the actual party leadership in the narrower sense, as well as from the years 1933 to 1936 in general, reached the holdings. Here, therefore, there was only the choice of registering individual pieces as such - if the historical value made it appear justified - or of combining documents that belonged together thematically or according to formal criteria to form artificial processes in which either the documented object or the formal criterion (e.g. Führer's discussions with Bormann, templates for Reichsleiter Bormann, lectures by Friedrich's head of department to the Führer's deputy) were decisive for the process formation. The relatively complete and complete series of orders, decrees and circulars of the deputy of the leader or of the party chancellery is of central importance not only with regard to the overall wrecked tradition of the entire collection, but also because of its outstanding independent source value. The information contained in these documents (cf. Section C 1) on all areas of the Party Chancellery's leadership and administrative activities was primarily intended for higher Nazi functionaries and constitutes a high-quality collection of sources, both in terms of quality and quantity, for research into the ruling apparatus of both the NSDAP and the Nazi regime in Germany, which could be used not only for special studies on Hess and Bormann's offices, but also for a variety of questions in the research of the Nazi era. It therefore seemed advisable not to leave it - under the influence of the party announcements printed in the Reichsverfügungsblatt - with a conventional recording of titles by volume, which was limited to chronological information, but to make the content of both the subject matter and the text of the decrees, orders and circulars as accessible as possible using the possibilities of automatic data processing. The result of this indexing will be presented in the second part of this finding aid book, while in the first part the series of party announcements will be recorded and listed in purely chronological order within the overall systematics of the stock (Section C 1). As far as possible, the classification of the records is based on the remaining business distribution plans of Divisions II and III. The "regulatory registration principle" was applied insofar as, for practical reasons, it proved necessary to provide for several development sections (Sections C 18 and C 19) at a relatively low organisational level (e.g. head office III B 2 c) in the case of relatively dense parts of the transmission from offices III B 1 and III B 2. In organisational areas with a ruinous tradition, on the other hand, written records of several groups were sometimes combined, e.g. groups II F and II W in section C 5. It goes without saying that in cases in which a classification was not formally possible due to a lack of business signs or due to the dissolution of the registry discipline at the end of the war, a decision was made on the basis of factual aspects. This applies in particular to the documents in connection with 20 July, which went directly to Bormann at the Führer's headquarters without any noteworthy processing by the Party Chancellery and from there went directly to the main archive of the NSDAP. In the classification scheme of the index they now appear under the generic term "Combating political opponents by security police and SD", although an assignment to Bormann's reference files in Chapter B would also have been conceivable. This applies mutatis mutandis to the documents relating to general party management matters, which are combined under "Management, Adjutant's Office" and in Sections C 2 and C 3 and for which there was no recognisable regulatory approach - not even in the form of a reference number - to registration. As it were, those documents were appended to the inventory under the designation "Special Tasks" which did not arise from Bormann's activity as head of the Party Chancellery, but were related to Bormann's activity as an administrator of Hitler's private assets. These are remnants of the traditions of the equipment of the planned "Führer Museum" in Linz and the recovery of the art treasures already "acquired" for this purpose, as well as a few files from the management of the "Führerstiftung Wohnungsbau Linz" and the administration of the "Führerbauten" on the Obersalzberg. A total of three concordances not only ensure that certain signatures of the holdings can be easily identified in the finding aid book (Concordance I), but also guarantee that archival documents cited after Allied signatures (Concordance II), after the provisional numbers of the Federal Archives or after earlier signatures from other holdings of the Federal Archives (Concordance III) remain easily accessible. In principle, an inventory of the Federal Archives is to be used according to the Federal Archives' specially prepared finding aids, since the Allied signatures indicated, for example, in the American "Guides to German Records microfilmed at Alexandria" or other finding aids for confiscated German files, mostly represent an outdated state of order of the files and can only be used for ordering American microfilms. For practical reasons, it should still be possible in individual cases to move from the Allied signature possibly cited in publications to the signature of the original in the Federal Archives. The present finding aid book was created as part of a retro-digitisation project of the Federal Archives and contains the digitised indexing results of the present conventional finding aid. In connection with the planned online launch, the portfolio was revised in 2008. The entire collection was supplemented above all by files and dossiers from the collection "NS Archive of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR". Citation method BArch NS 6/ .... Characterization of the content: The fact that a user of the inventory is repeatedly reminded of the fact that these are only highly unequally distributed debris or even scattered fragments of a formerly quantitatively and qualitatively important registry body, roughly comparable with the inventory of the Reich Chancellery (R 43), is certainly the main reason why considerations of the historical value of the existing traditions must have an ambivalent result. Due to the closed series of the "Verfügungen, Anordnungen und Rundschreiben" and the - admittedly for the most part for a long time published -(1) Überlieferung zum 20. Juli 1944 (1) the holdings certainly belong to the qualitatively most significant from the time of the Nazi rule. However, even against the background of the most recent outstanding importance and competence of the party law firm and in particular of its head, the tradition still received cannot make up for the loss of important parts of the registry. Thus Bormann's much-described closeness and position of trust in relation to Hitler is documented at best in some splintery notes on "Führerbesprechungungen". The party's relationship to the state, Bormann's role in the Nazi power structure, in particular also considerations of the actual power of Hitler's directly assigned offices and the forms of rule exercised by them cannot be conclusively assessed on the basis of Bormann's preserved sources and the party chancellery, in which some important conclusions could rightly have been expected for the aforementioned reason. The fact that, instead, the Nazi regime's efforts to build social housing during the war are very closely documented and can largely make up for the loss of the Reich Housing Commissioner's tradition is a pleasing finding for the detailed researcher in this context, but it is undoubtedly of subordinate importance overall. The question remains as to whether the decisive files - such as the personal registry - will be filed by the applicant.
