Archival history

Manfred Holzach was born on 8 November 1912 as the eldest son of insurance director Ludwig F. J. Holzach and his wife Ilse, née von Pavel, daughter of Prussian lieutenant general Kurt von Pavel. After the first years of his youth in Alsace, he moved to Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse in 1919, where Holzach attended elementary school and later the Realgymnasium. After graduating from high school in October 1931, Holzach studied insurance science, economics and law at the University of Berlin. From 1936, Holzach worked in the field at the "Filialdirektion von Ramm" of Allianz in Berlin and became the youngest member of the "Gross-Lebens-Club" of Allianz. In 1939 he married Irmgard Löwe, the daughter of the landowner Curt Löwe and his wife Emma, née Kühn. During the Second World War, Holzach initially took part in the Polish campaign as a soldier. In February 1940 he was promoted to Ordonance Officer and then worked in the staff of Group XXI in preparation for the invasion of Norway. In 1940 he was promoted to lieutenant-general and was given his first position as a general staff officer. In this function he was stationed in Norway, Finland, Russia, the Balkans and Italy. There Holzach was finally taken prisoner of war in 1945. Between 1946 and 1947 Holzach acted as trustee of the American military government for the company "Tonwerke Heppenheim Fritz Straum".

Scope and content

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling
