Inventory description: The customs and excise deputation was used to supervise the entire customs and excise system in 1814. It monitored customs duties on goods, ship customs duties and consumption excise duties (excise duty). In 1844 the Trade Statistics Office (from 1912 Trade Statistics Office) was established in the main customs office as an administrative branch. In 1863, the deputation was merged with the stamp duty for the deputation of indirect taxes and duties, which in 1874 received three departments responsible for stamp paper, declaration of goods and consumption duty. When the deputation was abolished in 1920, the Trade Statistics and Freeport Office was formed. The Best. comprises essentially protocols and disposal books as well as files to the following ranges: General administration (organisation, accounting, personnel matters, buildings and inventory), Hamburg taxes and levies, Hamburg statistics (import and export of goods, shipping), trade and transport matters, prices and cost of living, non-Hamburg customs duties and taxes; the acts of war concerning goods and shipping in the First World War are of particular importance.
