Archival history

Before being transferred to Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG (VSt) in 1926, the Rheinelbe-Alma, Pluto and Bonifacius mines were part of the old Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG (GBAG) in Gelsenkirchen. GBAG was founded when the Rheinelbe and Alma 3 collieries were acquired on 3 January 1873. The oldest acquisition of the Rheinelbe colliery dates back to 23 March 1848, when the two collieries Rheinelbe and Alma, which originally consisted of eight individual fields, were gradually united and, due to investment difficulties and political turmoil, finally sold by the owners to the French entrepreneur Louis Henry Obert and the Englishman John Brown, who in turn sold their shares to the French company Société des mines et fonderies du Rhin Détillieux et. Cie. sold. This company, together with Alma's individual assumptions, which later formed the Alma mine field, had to sell the combined Rheinelbe fields to Phoenix AG für Bergbau und Hüttenbetrieb due to financial difficulties, but even the latter was unable to operate the Rheinelbe colliery due to a lack of capital and heavy water intakes in shaft 1, which had begun in 1855. In 1856 the rights were transferred to the Gelsenkirchener Kohlengrubengesellschaft, which transferred them to the aforementioned Charles Détillieux in 1857. It was not until 1860 that production could begin at Rheinelbe 1 shaft, and on 27 January 1870 Alma 1 shaft was finally sunk, which began production in 1872. In 1873, Friedrich Grillo planned to buy up all the mines in the then Gelsenkirchener Mulde called Essener Mulde, which were working with foreign capital, and to combine them into a single German mining company. For GBAG in Gelsenkirchen, which was founded for this purpose, the Rheinelbe and Alma collieries formed the basis for the development of what would later become the continent's largest mining company. In 1877 the two pit fields were renamed Ver. Rheinelbe.
