Twenty-six letters exchanged between Brigadier-General Hon. Sir C.P. Crewe M.P., corresponding from East London and Cape Town, South Africa, and Long. Crewe's letters contain a detailed and often highly critical review of events, largely political and military in South Africa. They include comment on, for example, the unceasing conflict between Dutch and British interests; the East African campaign; the political situation in the Union and Botha's position as Prime Minister; recruiting within the Union for the East African and European theatres of war; the necessity for post-war British immigration into South Africa to counterbalance the Dutch population; the growth of nationalist and republican feeling amongst the Dutch; etc. Includes three letters exchanged between Long, Sir L.S. Jameson and Lord Selborne dealing with enclosure f from Crewe, February 1917.
