Description of the holdings: Abt. 189 Heylsches Landgut Pfauenmoos Size: 77 AK and one running metre oversized formats (incl. 189_F = 307 VE) = 7.5 running metres Duration: 1857 - 2007 1st prehistory and takeover of the documents in May 2012 After the death of Ludwig C. v. Heyl zu Herrnsheim (1920-2010), who had handed over extensive private and company documents to the archive since 1997, which were intensively recorded in the city archives (Abt. 185), his two sons Dr. Ludwig v. Heyl (Landgut Nonnenhof, Bobenheim-Roxheim south of Worms) and Dr. Johannes v. Heyl (Freidorf/Kanton Thurgau, CH) approached the City Archives with the question of whether a takeover of further supplementary family documents that were already stored and indexed (cf. Dept. 186) in the archives would be possible. These were located on the castle or country estate Pfauenmoos (canton St. Gallen, municipality Berg SG, Switzerland) acquired by the family in 1848/49, since 1923 a foundation according to Swiss law. Mainly due to the close personal ties of Ludwig C. v. Heyl ('Lu') to Pfauenmoos, in which he had lived regularly and for a longer period of time almost to the end of his life together with his wife Gisela (1923-2011, née Greiser, married since 1945), there were numerous private and family papers there which would await inspection and development. The project was also agreed with Ludwig v. Heyl's younger brother Gebhard v. Heyl (born 1930, resident in Munich). A takeover of family papers was also envisaged in view of the incipient planning for renovation work on the property. In view of the expected significance of the family documents for the history of the city and its closely connected von Heyl family, and against the background of the close and trusting cooperation with their relatives over many years, the archive gladly took up this suggestion and agreed in advance with the art historian and publisher Dr. Ferdinand Werner, who in 2010 as co-editor of the extensive anthology on the family and its buildings had already dealt with Pfauenmoos as an outstanding cultural monument. After the necessary organisational clarifications in 2011/12, the archive manager Dr. Gerold Bönnen, the archive employee Margit Rinker-Olbrisch (Dipl.-Arch. FH) and the aforementioned Dr. Ferdinand Werner travelled to Switzerland from 23-25 May 2012. On-site support was provided by Dr. Johannes v. Heyl, with whom all questions that arose were discussed before and after the event. The archives were mostly located in a climatically suitable room on the 2nd floor, the condition and important working steps were documented photographically. Close cooperation with the Cantonal Archives in St. Gallen was important to the City Archives, as the archives relating to the Foundation and the site itself were of course to remain on site. Through this collegial cooperation (discussion on site with Mrs. Regula Zürcher, who is responsible for private records) and due to the willingness of the family and the family foundation, it was possible to clarify that the parts of the archive that directly concern the property and the house or the family foundation should be deposited in the cantonal archives and recorded there, an exchange of the finding aids was agreed. The portion earmarked for the cantonal archives (approx. 13 running metres) comprises correspondence from the administration of the foundation, the Pfauenmoos Castle Association, estate management (from approx. 1890) and forestry, official books (cash books, accounting, bank documents, etc.), files, contracts relating to acquisition, leasing and construction matters, inventories (also at the time of the transfer of ownership in 1848/49) as well as a measuring certificate (1849). There are also some documents from Lederhandels-AG (Switzerland). The share taken over from the municipal archives of Worms and transferred to Worms on 25.5.2012 had approximately the same extent (approx. 12-13 running metres). For some of the documents, it was agreed that they would be digitised and the originals returned to the family (Chronicle of Pfauenmoos, collection of plans, photographs). Dr. Werner's stay on site was also used by Dr. Werner for a comprehensive photographic documentation of the highly interesting art-historical property with many references to Worms. A monograph on the history of the listed building is currently being planned. Following the trip, Dr. Werner and Claus Reisinger (Wernersche Verlagsgesellschaft) voluntarily documented approx. 30 family photographs from Pfauenmoos, which were hung there and have since been returned, in high quality for the photo department of the city archive (80 illustrations = 1.93 GB). 2. indexing and special features The indexing of the holdings (new archive department 189) was carried out between June 2012 and January 2013 by the archive manager with the help of a student trainee. A donation contract with the city was already concluded with Dr. Johannes v. Heyl in August 2012. A cassation took place only in very small extent; only 18 files from the very extensive correspondence series of Ludwig v. Heyl in the years 1977 to 2000 (approx. 2 running meters): Congratulations 1986-90, Christmas cards and greetings 1975-1981, 1991, 1994, 1998; General Corresp. 1975-77; 60th Birthday 1980; General Correspondence Switzerland and International 1990-99) were not accepted due to the redundancy of the documents. Special arrangements were made for the Pfauenmoos Chronicle (Hauschronik, No. 001), which was digitised in the City Archives and returned to Switzerland, the plans returning after its partial digitisation (Nov. 2012, Digitisation Centre City Archives Mannheim) and some of the older photographs. For reasons of conservation, the oldest framed photos dating back to 1845 (Daguerro type!) remain in the collection, while the archive takes care of the professional treatment and guarantees, among other things, optimal air conditioning. As mentioned, the vast majority of framed hanging older family photos have been digitized and have already returned to Pfauenmoos in their original form. To supplement the collection, Dr. Werner has made available to the archive digitally drafts of the architect Bluntschli's plans for the conversion of Pfauenmoos from the period around 1880/90, which he had obtained from the ETH Zurich archives. 3. content emphases The holdings represent such a pleasing extension of the other Heyl estates because there are many cross-references to other parts of the family records. Ludwig v. Heyl jun. (1920-2010) in particular had stored a large amount of personal papers (e.g. correspondence from the 1930s until his death, also older family photos including daguerrotypes back to 1845) at his place of residence in Switzerland, which can now be used together with the documents already recorded (Dept. 185, 186, 1801/1). The links with other family archive holdings are close. The classification tries to take into account the different components. The focus is on the correspondence between the two owners Ludwig v. Heyl (senior, 1886-1962) and above all his son Ludwig v. Heyl (jun., 'Lu') from the period between the 1920s and shortly after 2000. The content of the collection reflects numerous family and company aspects of the von Heyl family, as Pfauenmoo contained documents of great thematic diversity, an illustration of which is the classification developed. According to Ludwig v. Heyls (sen., 1886-1962), correspondence between the 1920s and his death, including correspondence with Swiss personalities such as the temporary Federal President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Thomas Holenstein, is particularly noteworthy. In addition, there are documents on the charitable-ecclesiastical Swiss aid activated for Worms after 1946 (e.g. corr. with Rev. Buff) as well as internal family and company-related correspondence. The extensive correspondence of his son Ludwig v. Heyl (jun, 1920-2010), including the correspondence from the war years, family correspondence, plant-related letters (Heyl-Liebenau company until its liquidation in 1974) and materials, documents on his strong ties with the Bayreuth Festival after 1951 and his social activities in associations such as Rotary Clubs, lobbies of the leather industry, traditional associations (Militaria), etc. In all these fields, there is close interaction with the documents already existing in Dept. 185, which is why both holdings should be used in parallel when dealing with these topics. In addition there are older documents about Pfauenmoos from the time since ca. 1880, a collection of plans, photos and mixed material as well as personal documents of Gisela von Heyl, above all family correspondence from the time between ca. 1970 and 2000 (closed for use, see below). The photographs were recorded in a separate sub-collection 189_F comprising 36 units of description. Among these, in addition to the family pictures dating back to 1845, slide series from the 1970s on the demolition of the Majorshof and the Liebenau work should also be highlighted. 4. use and legal questions Notwithstanding the fact that the documents became the property of the City of Worms after the conclusion of the donation contract, blocking periods for use were set for a good 20 units of registration, as private and personal interests of Ludwig v. Heyls and his wife Gisela are particularly affected there. 1. biography: Karl Joseph Wilhelm Florestan Gero Crescentius Prince of Urach Count of Württemberg was born on 15 February 1865 in Ulm as the younger son of Wilhelm (I.) Duke of Urach and Florestine Duchess of Urach née Princess of Monaco (1); the prince attended the primary school and the Jesuit grammar school in Monaco (2) together with his older brother Wilhelm (II.) Duke of Urach. In 1877 he moved to the Jesuit educational institution of Our Lady Stella matutina in Feldkirch. After a further change of school in 1881, he graduated from the Karlsgymnasium in Stuttgart in 1883 and studied for two semesters at the University of Munich (3) from 1883 to 1884. There he attended lectures in metaphysics and history of Greek philosophy with the professor of philosophy and later Bavarian Prime Minister and German Chancellor Georg Graf von Hertling (1843-1919) as well as lectures in political science with the journalist and writer Professor Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl (1823-1897). 1883 he was appointed second lieutenant à la suite of the Ulan regiment King Karl (1st Württ.) No. 19 (4). In April 1886 Prince Karl entered the active service of this regiment, but had to leave the active service due to illness. In March 1887, the prince retired as an officer à la suite from the active service of the regiment. In the following years the prince was granted the usual promotions for a member of the House of Württemberg under the position à la suite of the regiment: in 1887 he was appointed prime lieutenant, in 1891 cavalry master, in 1899 cavalry major and in 1906 lieutenant colonel. From 1884, Karl Fürst von Urach travelled extensively (5): from 1884 to 1886 he travelled South America, visiting the Cordilleras and studying the Indian tribes on the upper reaches of the Amazon (6). He later handed over the ethnological collection he acquired during his journey to the Linden Museum in Stuttgart. Also in the time after 1887 he often stayed in Italy, Greece, in the Balkans, in Egypt, where he owned real estate in Heliopolis near Cairo (7), and in the Ottoman Empire. In 1891 he took part in an expedition to Spitsbergen (8), in 1893 the prince travelled to the USA(9). The few documents on the trip to the USA (especially letters of recommendation) (10) that are preserved in the present inventory suggest that this trip was also used for ethnological studies of Indian tribes. So he learned Turkish, Arabic and Persian. Last but not least, between 1893 and 1925 the prince had Arab rooms (11) built into his palace on Neckarstraße in Stuttgart, which he decorated with furniture, carvings, tiles, works made of plaster stucco, carpets and other antiques from the Orient. During the First World War, Prince Karl was finally able to use his language skills and the knowledge he had acquired about this region during his many journeys to the Orient for his work as a German liaison officer in the Ottoman Empire (12). He performed this function between 1916 and 1917, when Prince Karl took over several honorary offices. He was president of the Württemberg group of the German Colonial Society (13) and member of the Württemberg regional association of the German Fleet Association (14). He supported the Society for the Promotion of German Settlements in Palestine (15). He also supported the work of the airship designer Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin by subscribing to shares in the company for the promotion of airship travel (16).Karl Fürst von Urach was awarded numerous orders in the course of his life (17): in 1883 the Prince received the Monegasque Order of Saint Charles, in 1889 the Grand Cross of the Persian Order of the Sun and Lions (18), in 1897 the Ottoman Order of First Class, in 1899 the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Medal. In 1910 he was awarded the Prussian Red Eagle Order. In 1916 he received the Wilhelmskreuz with swords and crown, one year later the royal Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen and the Iron Cross 2nd class. Karl Fürst von Urach died on 5 December 1925 in Stuttgart. He was buried in the Catholic section of the crypt of the castle church Ludwigsburg. 2. to the order and distortion of the stock:: Together with the Archive of the Dukes and Princes of Urach Grafen von Württemberg, the GU 120 collection was deposited in the Main State Archives in 1987. There, the archives of the House of Urach form the GU series of inventories within the inventory classification (tectonics). During the reorganization of the archive by Wolfgang Schmierer, Director of the Archive, the documents on Karl Fürst von Urach were given the signature GU 120, and since the materials were in a poor state of order, the units of registration had to be formed for the most part first. Where it made sense, the existing units were retained. During the indexing work, extensive documents were removed from the GU 120 holdings and assigned in particular to the GU 96 (Miscellaneous and Unclear), GU 100 (Foreign Archives and Other Collections), GU 107 (Florestine Duchess of Urach), GU 117 (Wilhelm (II.) Duke of Urach) and GU 202 (Bertha Freiin von Biegeleben) holdings. Moreover, it cannot be ruled out that further material of the provenance of Karl Fürst von Urach may be found in the as yet unlisted holdings of the House of Urach. by far the largest part of the holdings consists of the extensive correspondence of the Prince (category 2), above all with his mother (category 2.1.1) with his brother Wilhelm and his family (category 2.1.2) as well as with Bertha von Biegeleben (category 2.1.5). The latter was the court lady of his mother Florestine and a close confidante of the prince. In addition, correspondence with representatives of the German and European ruling and former ruling princely houses can be found in the holdings (Section 2.5). Karl Fürst von Urach also corresponded with numerous public figures (section 2.7), including scholars. Almost all correspondence is so-called unilateral correspondence, that is, only the letters of the correspondence partner are found in the existing stock. If there are isolated letters or drafts of letters from the Reigning Prince to the respective addressee, this is expressly mentioned in the title recording. Usually these are letters of the prince returned to the prince or his family afterwards. It should also be noted that Prince Karl did not make any copies of his correspondence. The correspondences can be regarded as an interesting source for the history of everyday life and mentality of the nobility. They show the manifold contacts which the prince maintained with members of other noble families. They also certainly offer details of the Prince's numerous journeys. However, it was not possible to index the contents of the correspondence due to the time and effort involved. Unfortunately, the correspondences and correspondence series contained in this collection sometimes have smaller gaps. It is not possible at the present time to answer the question of whether the previously unlisted holdings of the archives of the House of Urach still contain correspondence of the prince. Besides the correspondence, the extensive collections of photos and photographs (category 10) form the second largest part of the holdings in terms of the number of title recordings. Of particular interest are the photos and photo albums with photos from the Prince's numerous travels to South America, Egypt, the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans (Section 10.2.2). There are also photos taken during the aforementioned activity of the prince as a liaison officer in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War (section 10.2.4). Prince Karl's interest in Islamic (Arabic) art is also reflected in the numerous photographs of buildings and artworks of Islamic art, which are combined in section 10.3. Of the other materials preserved in the present collection, the Prince's manuscripts with literary and art-historical texts and a memorandum on the political reorganization of Europe by Germany in the First World War should also be mentioned, as well as interesting documents on the associations and societies in which the Prince was active and in which he was active. In an appendix (column 16) photos, an album and seal from the possession of the Wera Duchess of Württemberg née Grand Duchess of Russia are united, which after the death of the Duchess were handed over by her daughter Olga Prinzessin zu Schaumburg-Lippe to Karl Fürst von Urach.In addition, correspondences of the brother of Karl Fürst von Urach, Wilhelm (II.) Duke of Urach, to Charlemagne's estate, to the Arab rooms and to a newspaper article about the princes were added to the collection (19). Since these materials refer to Karl Fürst von Urach, the classification into the present holdings seemed to be reasonable. As expected, documents on Karl Fürst von Urach are also available in other holdings of the archives of the House of Urach. In particular the holdings GU 99 (photo albums and collections), GU 107 (Florestine Herzogin von Urach née Prinzessin von Monaco), GU 117 (Wilhelm (II.) Herzog von Urach) and GU 202 (Bertha von Biegeleben) are to be mentioned here. the archives of the holdings may only be inspected with the prior permission of the chief of the House of Urach. the holdings GU 120 were catalogued by the undersigned from autumn 2004 to April 2005. History of Tradition For the history of the authorities, see the preface to the holdings Ho 235 T 3 Processor's report In Section I, Section VI Trade and Industry, files were produced in the following areas: Size and weight, annual and weekly markets, trade concessions and pedlar trade, customs association and traffic in the same, trade, trade schools, trade police, guild system, book printers and bookstores, insurance companies and emigration agents as well as patent awards, building craftsmen and chimney sweeps, restaurants and pubs, Mills and shipping as well as water engines, ban rights, factories and steam boilers as well as smoke development, mining and metallurgy and saltworks as well as petroleum, budget and cash management, health insurance of workers, accident insurance of workers, disability and old age insurance, economic and other measures as a result of the world wars. Files on trade and trade schools were originally listed under a classification point "Trade" in the old index. However, since this was a confusing abundance of file titles, the division into two classification points was recommended: the classification point "Wanderschaften der Handwerksgesellen und Dispensationen davon" no longer has any files. The present repertory is the revised version of the 1852 official finding aid of the Prussian Government Section I Section VI Trade and Industry of 1852 with a supplement of 1927 (see No. 739). There is an index to the old repertory (see no. 740). There is also a concordance in the archive (see No. 741) between the authority file number and the NVA (=newly recorded files) number assigned in the archive. The addendum is partly in line with the 1852 finding fund of the authorities and partly not. Occasionally, file numbers that had previously been regarded as order signatures were assigned twice. As this is a means of finding authorities, supplements were made and these were not always in the expected places, which led to a great deal of confusion. Also the various entries about destruction or transfer to other registries (especially registry G of the standing registry) and other authorities created confusion about the existence or location of the files. The NVA numbers behind the individual title records (if at all clearly assignable) gave a certain indication that the file must already have been in the archive. - The NVA number was the first signature assigned in the archive, later the files were detached from the NVA stock again and were set up again according to the old authority signature. - However, not every file with an NVA number could be found. The complexity and the poor manageability of the old finding aid, in addition to the necessity of simplifying the old signatures, have led to the present directory. The first processing of the inventory took place only on the basis of the finding aids and not on the basis of the files. The content of the titles was not checked against the files, but only carefully normalised. The actual existence of the files and their duration was determined in the inventory in the magazine. Files from the previously unallocated remainder of the total holdings of the Prussian Government of Sigmaringen had to be allocated to the present partial holdings. In the course of the file check, the notes in the file were included in the repertory and no evidence of prior provenance was found. Unless it was a matter of a file with the preliminary provenance "Prussian Government Sigmaringen" and with the final provenance "Presidents of Hohenzollern - Liquidation Office".
