History: With the introduction of the ministerial organisation in Saxony after 1831, a separate ministry was set up to manage and supervise the affairs of the royal court. It supervised the previously independent court authorities. His duties consisted in the administration of all personal and property affairs of the members of the Saxon royal family, the highest management of the entire court system (excluding the princely court holdings), the administration of the royal civil list as well as the supervision of the Hausfideikommiss (excluding the scientific and art collections). After the abdication of the royal house in 1918 the ministry was dissolved.

For further information see 2.3.1 Royal House and Court Authorities

Content: Court Budget - Marriages - Births - Deaths - Apanages - Capitals - The Ministry was dissolved. Earlier, on 15 October 1831, the Minister of State of the Justice Julius Traugott Jacob von Könneritz had already been appointed Minister of the Royal House by the highest rescript. Together with Bernhard August von Lindenau, Chairman of the Ministry of the Interior and Minister of State for the Interior, he worked out the basic outlines of the Ministry's competence and organisation.(3) Neither the other ministers nor the states participated in the matters falling within his competence. It was under the exclusive control of the king. The Ministry of the Royal House (4), - or as it was also commonly unofficially called: the Home Ministry - was responsible for the provision of all personal affairs of the King and the Royal House, i.e.
- all family and property matters of the royal house,
- the supreme direction and supervision of the entire court system whose central office was it (except for princely court offices), preparation and arrangement of all organic institutions concerning the whole or individual branches,
- Administration of the royal civil list and the associated supervision of the treasury and accounts of the royal civil list as well as the determination of the budget for the individual branches of the court and all extraordinary payments not justified therein,
- supreme supervision of the royal house fidei commission, except for scientific and art collections with special management,
- private property administration of the king.

At least from 1895 the private property administration of the king no longer belonged to the chamberlain's department and thus also no longer to the competence area of the house ministry, the royal casket remained however under supervision of the ministry.

Personally closely connected with the ministry, however, according to the state manuals not subordinated to it, the order's chancellery was.

In all matters within the competence of the Ministry which required a decision of the King, he was responsible for the preparation and the lecture at the Regent.

His seat was in the Royal Castle, as was, by the way, the entire Ministry. The Ministry and the Cabinet Office were housed in the former premises of the Interim Castle Command.(5)

The Minister of the Royal House was not a Minister of State or a member of the Ministry as a whole. In some cases, however, this function was performed by ministers of state in personal union.
Ministers of the Royal House:
- Julius Traugott Jacob von Könneritz 1831 - 1833
at the same time Minister of State of Justice
- Johannes von Minckwitz 1833 - 1835
1824 Director of the Foreign Department in the Secret Cabinet, 1835 envoy in Berlin
- Karl Friedrich Ludwig von Watzdorf 1835 - 1840
Generaladjutant
- unoccupied leadership 1840 - 1851
- Heinrich Anton von Zeschau 1851 - 1869
former State Minister of Finance
- Hermann von Nostitz-Wallwitz 1869 - 1871
at the same time State Minister of the Interior
- Dr. Johann Paul Freiherr von Falkenstein 1871 - 1882
former Minister of State for Culture and Public Education
- Hermann von Nostitz-Wallwitz 1882 - 1895
until 1891 also Minister of State for the Interior
- D. Dr. Kurt Damm Paul von Seydewitz 1895 - 1906
at the same time Minister of State for Culture and Public Education and Chancellor of the Order
- Karl Georg Levin von Metzsch-Reichenbach 1906 - 1918
former Minister of State for the Interior (6)

An Personnel were initially planned:
- Head of the House Ministry
- Cabinet Secretary Hofrat Albert Zenker (at the same time Cabinet Secretary, also active as Order Secretary)
- 1 Registrator
- 1 Chancellor List
- 1 Keeper (at the same time Heater, Messenger) (7)

- The Court Pay Office added to this. In 1837 a total of twelve people were employed in the Ministry, including the Chancellery and the Court Pay Office. This number of staff changed only slightly during the entire period of its existence and is also shown for 1914.

The Chancellery of the Ministry of the Royal House was associated with the Chancellery of the Cabinet, which, however, was expressly a state Chancellery. The influence of the Minister of the Royal House on them was limited to general supervision of the course of business, disciplinary supervision, recruitment of staff and the budget of the Cabinet Office. He was also entitled to use the staff employed here for the business of the Ministry of Housing. The Cabinet Office received all matters directly addressed to the King in matters of State and Government and presented them to the King, who made his own decisions or referred the matter to a Ministry. It was also generally the mediator for traffic between regents and ministries.(8)

In the course of the revolution, the house minister and the executive officers of the court departments resigned from their offices on 14.11.1918, thus setting the official endpoint of the ministry.(9) The cabinet office was also dissolved at the end of December 1918.(10) The dissolution work was essentially completed by mid-1919. Up to the mid-1920s, however, there were still stamps or address details with the ministerial designation, possibly supplemented by "former", to be found. After Saxony had meanwhile become a bourgeois parliament, the law on the conflict between the Free State of Saxony and the former royal house of 21 July 1924 (11) formed the legal endpoint of the development from the Ancient Regime to a bourgeois society.

Content history and content
After the end of the monarchy in 1918 and the subsequent dissolution of the ministry, the holdings were transferred to the Main State Archives. It was handed over by the Ministry of Finance in 1925 with a repertory of the authorities, which served as a finding aid until 2008.(12) Files that were given in 1918 ff. to the association "Haus Wettin albertinischer Linie e. V.", to the Ministry of Culture and Public Education (esp. musical chapel) as well as to the Castle Pension Office and cassations in the authority are still comprehensible in this repertory, which now lies with the holdings. Earlier cassations and deliveries of documents to other offices have been handed down in the files of the House Ministry itself.(13)

Single files of the House Ministry have been integrated into other holdings of the Main State Archives.
- Order file Loc. 52 No. 5 has been incorporated with files from the Order Chancellery into the holdings of the 10026 Secret Cabinet under item 26: Order Cases (Loc. 30344:...as a reward for special services ..., 1855).
- Foundation files Loc. 8 No. 11 (now 10711 Ministry of Culture and Public Education No. 19415) and Loc. 48 No. 2 (now 10711 Ministry of Culture and Public Education No. 19478)

The collection was comprehensively reworked by the undersigned in the years 2004 - 2008. The titles of the acts, which in many cases were only partially accurate, were specified and standardized for the series of acts. Wherever it appeared objectively necessary, extended records were kept; simple records were kept in particular of files for the routine handling of property management and registrants. Already in the 1950s, the names of the persons had been recorded in the files of the Court Theatre and the Musical Chapel in the thematic inventory "Theatre and Music". This has now been transferred to electronic form. In addition, the bearers of court predicates and congratulators were recorded. Evi Haß contributed part of the name entries in 2007. Preparatory work for the inventory delimitation by Elke Olbrich could be used.

A continuous registry-based classification scheme was not available in the inventory. The creation of official files was also not based on uniform principles throughout. In the course of archive processing, a classification of the stock was therefore also carried out. These, as well as the titles of the files, still partly show the difficulties of a systematic processing resulting from the outdated original state.

The holdings contain a small number of files of other provenances which the ministry apparently used for its purposes and which were thus handed over to the archive with the ministerial holdings. For this reason, and in order to avoid reassignations, they were left in place. However, they are identified with "Provenance: ..." As far as in the Main State Archives an own stock of this provenance exists, its stock signature is also indicated.

While the Ministry of the Royal House was also a supervisory authority, in many cases uncompressed information can be taken from its documents, such as information on royal journeys, hunting leases, buildings, theatre personnel, awarded court predicates, foundations and their applicants, estates - to name only a few possible research keywords. Because of the many personnel matters (recruitment, salary, gratuities, pensions, disciplinary matters), the stock also represents a treasure trove for genealogists. Research on the operation of the services at the individual Court Offices, in particular with regard to the personnel and material cost framework as well as extraordinary expenses, is an option. Last but not least, the collection reflects the society of the 19th and early 20th centuries as it was perceived and acted upon by the court. The user can be quite prepared for surprises (e.g.: menu of the restaurant Belvedere on the Brühlsche Terrasse from 07.03.1869.
