For the transitional period the Australians produced a kind of emergency money, the Treasury Notes. They were denominated in marks because the currency had already been introduced in New Guinea. In addition, the remaining wages of the German volunteers who capitulated were paid out. The primitively produced banknotes are among the rarest in the world today. Only a few specimens have survived. The HVB Stiftung Geldscheinsammlung is in possession of a fully preserved set of all nominal denominations with the control number 1.
