The Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt is responsible for the documents of the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt, the subordinate state offices in the cities of Darmstadt and Offenbach as well as in the districts Bergstraße, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Gießen (except for the Regierungspräsidium Gießen established in 1981), Groß-Gerau and Offenbach, in the Odenwaldkreis, in the Vogelsbergkreis and in the Wetteraukreis.As a historical archive, the Hessisches Staatsarchiv Darmstadt preserves the tradition of the former Landgrafschaft Hessen-Darmstadt and the territories incorporated over the centuries (aristocratic and clerical dominions, imperial cities) as well as the Grand Duchy of Hessen (until 1918) and the Volkstaat Hessen (until 1945) with the three provinces of Oberhessen, Starkenburg (southern Hesse) and Rheinhessen.
