Die Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation besitzt eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Kommunikationsobjekten mit deutschem Kolonialbezug. Die 1995 gegründete, von der Deutschen Post und der Deutschen Telekom getragene Stiftung, zu der die Museen für Kommunikation Berlin, Frankfurt am Main und Nürnberg sowie das Archiv für Philatelie in Bonn gehören, geht zurück auf das 1872 in Berlin gegründete Reichspostmuseum. Der Staatssekretär des Reichspostamts Heinrich von Stephan hat der deutschen Kolonisierung tatkräftig die Wege ebnen helfen. Den Ausbau der Postdampfschifflinien begleitete die Schaffung von Kolonialpostämtern in allen deutschen Kolonien. Daher nimmt es nicht Wunder, dass das Lieblingskind von Stephan, das von ihm 1872 in Berlin zur Dokumentation und Veranschaulichung des Nachrichtenwesens und der Beförderungseinrichtungen „aller Zeiten und Völker“ zur Belehrung der Beamtenschaft und des Publikums gegründete Museum sich engagiert in den Dienst der Kolonialidee stellte. Das erste Postmuseum der Welt entwickelte sich durch eifrige Sammlung und repräsentative Ausstellung aussagekräftiger Objekte der Kolonialpostgeschichte zu einem vielbesuchten Ort kolonialherrschaftlicher Identitätsstiftung und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bis 1939 zu einer Stätte kolonialer Erinnerung und des Kolonialrevisionismus. Die vom Reichspostmuseum von 1886 bis 1939 gesammelten und ausgestellten Objekte aus kolonialen Kontexten lassen sich in sechs Kategorien gliedern: 1. Objekte mit Kolonialbezug, die nicht in den Kolonien waren wie zum Beispiel die Briefmarkendruckstöcke der Kolonialmarken oder in Deutschland für die Ausstellung angefertigte Modelle. 2. Objekte der Reichspost, die in die Kolonien gebracht oder dort angefertigt wurden, um die postalischen Verbindungen aufzubauen und zu unterhalten wie Poststempel und Dienstsiegel, Uniformen und Beschilderungen. 3. Objekte aus den Kolonien, die die Kommunikations- und Verkehrsbedingungen der einheimischen Bevölkerung thematisieren wie Originalboote, Verkehrsmodelle und Nachrichtentrommeln, darunter auch Erinnerungsstücke als „Mitbringsel“ zurückgekehrter Deutscher. 4. Objekte aus den Kolonien, die von der einheimischen Bevölkerung bezüglich der Kolonialpost geschaffen wurden wie Fetische und Darstellungen der Kolonialpost. 5. Objekte, die mit der Institution Kolonialpost verschickt wurden wie Briefe, Post- und Ansichtskarten. 6. Fotografien von Kolonialposteinrichtungen und landestypischen Verkehrseinrichtungen. Das Gros der Sammlung gelangte meist als kostenfreie Übernahme von der Reichspost oder der Reichsdruckerei in den Bestand der nachgeordneten Museumsbehörde. Darüber hinaus erhielt das Museum hinsichtlich der Kategorien 1, 2, 5 und 6 sehr viele Geschenke, vor allem von Kolonialpostbeamten. Der Ankauf stellt eher die Ausnahme dar. Bezüglich der Objekte aus den Kategorien 3 und 4, deren Anzahl viel geringer ist, bedarf es weiterer Forschungen zu den Erwerbungszusammenhängen vor Ort. Von den im Reichspostmuseum gesammelten Objekten mit deutschem Kolonialbezug hat das Gros den Krieg und die Nachkriegswirren wenigstens leidlich überstanden. Abgesehen von den Kolonialpostwertzeichen umfasste der ursprüngliche Bestand wenigstens 450 Druckstöcke der Kolonialmarken, ungefähr 600 Fotografien und 500 Objekte anderer Kategorien, darunter Gemälde, Grafiken, Dokumente und Kartenmaterial, Poststempel und Dienstsiegel, Feldpostbriefe und Feldpostausrüstung, Uniformen und Textilien, Verkehrsmodelle sowie ethnologische Objekte. Die durch den Krieg geteilte Kolonialsammlung des Reichspostmuseums gelangte nach 1945 in die Obhut der Nachfolgeinstitutionen Bundespostmuseum Frankfurt am Main und Postmuseum der DDR sowie die allermeisten Kolonialpostwertzeichen 1955 in das Postwertzeichenarchiv des Bundespostministeriums in Bonn.

Father August Halbing was born in Mellrichstadt (Diocese of Würzburg) on November 5, 1870, was ordained a priest in Limburg on August 27, 1894 and died in Limburg on February 28, 1956. He was sent to Cameroon in October 1894, but already in July 1895, very weakened by tropical diseases, he had to return home. After his recovery he worked for several years as a teacher in our study home in Ehrenbreitstein, until he was able to travel to Cameroon a second time in 1900. During this second period in Cameroon he worked almost exclusively in Duala. The study of the national language was very important to him. He was able to print the Biblical story, the catechism and prayers in the Duala language, as well as a German grammar in Dula and a dictionary (German Duala) - all very valuable tools for the work of missionaries in the Duala district. In 1905 a second holiday trip to Europe became necessary and in 1906 he travelled to Cameroon for the third time, first again to Dula, until in 1907 he took over the management and the development of the catechist school in Einsiedeln on the slopes of the Cameroon Mountains, to which a Latin school for local priest candidates could be attached shortly before the war. He was able to train four courses of catechists himself, who together with the black teachers carried the mission work in Cameroon after the expulsion of the German missionaries in the First World War. At the end of 1913 P. Halbing had to return to his German homeland in need of rest. The outbreak of the First World War prevented his return to his beloved mission, which is why he sought to facilitate the lot of foreign prisoners of war by providing pastoral care in various camps until the end of the war. Inventory description Inventory history The entire file inventory was essentially the old file registry of the Buea governorate, which had been left there when it was evacuated in 1914. The holdings were later divided between the English administration in Buea and the French administration in Yaounde and merged in 1974 in the National Archives in Yaounde. After the evacuation of Yaounde on 1 January 1916, after the destruction of the unneeded parts, the files went to Spanish-Muni, from there via Fernando Poo to the seat of the Madrid embassy governorate. In 1919 the files were transferred to the Reichsarchiv, where a large part was destroyed as not worthy of preservation. The rest fell victim to a bombing raid on Potsdam on 20 April 1945. Thus the files kept in the National Archives in Yaounde - apart from the preserved files of the R e i c h s k o l o n i a l a m t - constitute the only official written record of the period of German colonial rule in Cameroon. Archival evaluation and processing The Federal Archives' efforts to secure and film the files stored in Cameroon from the time of the German colonial administration date back to 1970. Through the mediation of the Federal Foreign Office and the German Embassy, the Federal Archives were able to offer the Director of the National Archives in Yaounde Cameroon the opportunity to send a German archivist to Cameroon for a limited period of time in order to arrange and record the German holdings together with local staff. The project was approved on 6 August 1971. After solving various organizational, financial and personnel problems, the project was realized in 1974/75. In a subsequent phase of the project, beginning in 1983, the files were to be filmed by means of microfilm exchange, whereby the technical equipment was to be left to the National Archives, after local staff had received appropriate training during the filming campaign. The films exposed in Cameroon were developed, controlled and duplicated in the Federal Archives. The National Archives in Yaounde received a duplicate film.
