He had always wanted to return to Africa, but the board had said that a man with Bock's stricken health would never be sent to Africa. The board said it should get to 'the studies' quickly or it would retire early. By 'studies' Bock understood a study and not the Abitur. Why did the board support him financially for a few months when he did not agree with Bock's stay in Kiel? Bock had assumed that he did not need a high school diploma and would soon be sent back to Africa with another missionary society.
