Administrative history: The Oberappellationsgericht (OAG) of the four free German cities was established in Lübeck in 1820 as the joint supreme court of the cities of Frankfurt, Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck. After the annexation of Frankfurt by Prussia, the court remained the OAG of the free Hanseatic cities from 1867. With the establishment of the Federal Higher Commercial Court in Leipzig, it lost a substantial part of its competences. It was dissolved in 1879 and found its successor in the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court of Hamburg. The OAG was the general court of third instance for the cities involved. It also negotiated matters of exit between princes of the German Confederation. In addition, it was the examination commission for the lawyer candidates from Bremen since 1821, from Lübeck since 1826, from Frankfurt since 1858 and from Hamburg since 1870. Archiving history: The trial files and the examination files for the lawyer candidates were distributed to the four participating cities in 1952, after Lübeck had already received the administrative files in 1936. The Hamburg Best. contains 2182 trial files in civil matters and 133 in criminal matters. In civil law, the area of commercial law is dominant. In contrast to the trial files of the Reichskammergericht, the files of the OAG are not very productive, except from a legal point of view, due to the return of the evidence documents.
