Foreword: On June 27, 1801, the previous Geheime Conseil was dissolved under Conducting Minister Konrad Theodor von Kretschmann and the Geheime Departement was established as the new supreme authority of the Principality (from 1806 Duchy) of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. This was later given the name Ministry of State. Even after the personal union of Saxe-Coburg and Saxe-Gotha in 1826, the Ministry continued to exist as the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Ministry for both duchies as an advisory body to the sovereign, and from 1816-1834 also for the Principality of Lichtenberg (Saarland). In 1844, the ministry was renamed the State Ministry. In 1846, the now State Ministry was divided into departments, thus initiating the concentration of Coburg and Gotha affairs in certain departments. In 1849, the I. In 1849, Coburg affairs were assigned to Department I, Gotha affairs to Department II and joint affairs to Department III.<br />The form of the Ministry of State that was valid until 1918 had existed since 1857/58, after which there were two ministerial departments, one for Coburg and one for Gotha. The ministry was based in Gotha. A special department C for house and court matters in Coburg, which was created later, was dissolved in 1886 following the establishment of the Court Office in 1880. The State Ministry was also subject to constant organizational changes in other respects. The Gotha ministerial department was responsible for matters relating to religious orders.<br />Files of the State Ministry that had not yet been completed when Coburg was united with Bavaria in 1920 were handed over to the government of Upper Franconia in Bayreuth and are now held in the K 3 collection in the Bamberg State Archives. Files were also handed over to the Coburg deanery. From there, these documents were transferred to the state church archives in Nuremberg.
